2023

Opening an innovative reference center

On May 19, 2023, FEFU representatives announced that an innovative endoscopic diagnostic reference center was opened on the basis of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU).

As reported, the Diagnostic Center was created within the framework of the National Project "Health" in order to optimize the diagnosis of diseases and increase the professional level of specialists in the region through training, further introduction of innovative technologies and modern methods of treatment in the workplace. Modern endoscopic equipment for specialized diagnostics and treatment, supplied by Olympus, will optimize the process of detecting various diseases, in particular cancers, significantly increasing the chances of patients for treatment, including minimally invasive.

The endoscopy department of the FEFU Medical Center includes four diagnostic rooms and one equipped operating room. In the FEFU medical center, employees perform the entire list of endosurgical interventions: from simple, like polypectomy, to more serious, included in the list of high-tech not only for the Primorsky Territory, but also the Far East.

The center will develop training programs and courses that will allow medical specialists to learn advanced approaches to diagnosing endoscopic diseases in practice and implement the most innovative methods necessary to treat patients.

Lecturers in this course are:

  • Dvoinikova Ekaterina Romanovna - candidate of medical sciences, head of the department (center) of endoscopy;
  • Konstantin Dmitrievich Khalin - candidate of medical sciences, endoscopist of the department (center) of endoscopy.

In May 2023, the fundamental factor in the successful treatment of the disease is its timely diagnosis. The opening of an innovative endoscopic reference center is a significant event for all residents of not only the Primorsky Territory, but also the entire Far Eastern District. In most cases, timely and accurate diagnosis of the disease is the main key to success, including before performing complex operations. Also, this equipment allows not only to carry out diagnostic procedures, but also to perform complex endoscopic high-tech intraluminal operations. The equipment supplied to this center will help us diagnose a wide range of diseases and treat them, which of course will contribute to the provision of timely care to patients. Another important function of the center is training. Thematic master classes, lectures, manual skills training and more will be held for specialists from all over the Far East and Siberia.

In total, four training cycles per year are planned on the basis of the center. The first training course will be held from May 22 to 26, 2023. Within the framework of it, it is planned to conduct lectures, solve clinical cases, work out skills on simulators. Endoscopists from different regions of the Far Eastern Federal District will gather for training on the course.

Thanks to the fruitful interaction of all those involved in this project, we will be able to conduct a number of trainings for endoscopists of the Far Eastern Federal District, which will be a significant step in the development of this area of ​ ​ diagnostics throughout the region. The main feature of the project is that trainings will become not only classes for specialists, but also a kind of platform for the exchange of professional experience between colleagues.

Surgery to sense bionic prosthetic legs and stop phantom pains

2020: FEFU suggests treating patients with spinal cord injury with neuromodulation

On December 11, 2020, it became known that scientists from the School of Biomedicine of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and the FEFU NTI Center for Neurotechnologies, VR and AR, together with other experts, proposed to revise the current practice of spastic syndrome therapy, one of the main complications after severe spinal injuries with a partial spinal cord break, which entails deterioration of the patient's condition and sharply limits the possibilities of rehabilitation. 2018: A cell experiment using bioinformatics and computer modeling techniques

Cells of living organisms are able to transmit more than 2 bits of information. Such data received a scientist of the School of Biomedicine of the Far Eastern Federal University (ShBM FEFU) Vladimir Katanaev with colleagues from Switzerland on the results of experiments on cells using bioinformatics and computer modeling methods, reported in March 2018 in FEFU. Information about the study is published in the international journal Nature Communications.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the target of half of all current drugs. Therefore, it is fundamentally important to know the amount of information that the cell can reliably receive through these receptors, "explained Vladimir Katanaev, head of the laboratory of pharmacology of natural compounds of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, FEFU.

During the experiments, the scientists exposed the cells to various concentrations of the chemical signal and recorded their reaction. Data analysis and modeling have concluded that GPCR receptors are capable of transmitting at least two bits of information - much more than previously thought.

Using the calcium response measured in individual cells when muscarinic receptors are re-stimulated, we show that GPCR signaling systems have significantly higher information capacity than previously thought, "explained Vladimir Katanaev. - We estimate the capacity of this signal transmission system above two bits. This means that the cell is able to reliably distinguish between at least four levels of agonist concentration (the chemical that causes the receptor response).

The researcher noted that the discovery solves a long-standing biological mystery about the principles of intracellular signaling. The findings will be useful to anyone involved in medical research and drug development. Researchers from the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and other scientists also took part in the work.

Recall that before Vladimir Katanaev, as part of an international group of researchers, revealed one of the important mechanisms for the formation of nerve cell processes. Scientists were the first in the world to identify a signal chain that ensures the growth of nerve cell endings in various organisms from insects to humans.

2013: Opening of FEFU Medical Center

The Medical Center of the Far Eastern Federal University opened its doors in June 2013, it is one of the largest and most modern regional medical centers in Russia. On the basis of the center, it is planned to receive patients not only from Primorye, but also from all over the Far East, and in the future - from the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. The Medical Center includes 8 medical and 3 diagnostic centers, adult and children's advisory clinics, a multidisciplinary hospital with 200 beds, as well as an operating unit with unique equipment for conducting complex operations in the field of surgery, neurosurgery and traumatology.
