2018: Implementation of the ARCore platform and Google application of Lens in Helio P90

The MediaTek company announced on December 14, 2018 completion of testing and implementation of the ARCore platform and Google application of Lens in a high-performance chipset of Helio P90. The company closely cooperated with Google to provide Helio P90 — the freshest release for December 14 in the Helio P family — the technology of augmented reality optimized by support. ARCore. Description

ARCore: augmented reality on Android

ARCore works at Java/OpenGL, Unity and Unreal and is focused on the following directions:

  • Tracking of the movement. Using the phone camera for tracking of reference points in the room (items these points define the place where a virtual object will be located) and given a gyroscope, ARCore defines provision and orientation of the device during the movement. At the same time virtual objects remain where you them located.
  • Recognition of the environment. Usually objects of augmented reality are placed on a floor or a table. ARCore can distinguish horizontal surfaces, using the same reference points, as when tracking the movement.
  • Lighting assessment. ARCore defines an illumination level of the environment and gives the chance to developers to light virtual objects according to a situation around. Thanks to it they look is even more realistic.

Start of the preview version

On August 30, 2017 the Google company announced start of the preview version of SDK (a set of means for software development) ARCore. According to the statement of the company, developers can already begin to experiment with ARCore.[1]

Within the last three years we work on technologies which contribute to the development of augmented reality on mobile devices, using the Tango platform. It became a basis for ARCore creation. Thanks to the fact that this SDK does not require the additional hardware it can be applied on different Android devices. We are going to start ARCore on millions of devices. From now on it is available on Pixel and Samsung S8 working at Android 7.0 and later versions. To end of the test period we calculate that ARCore will work for 100 million devices. In order that it worked qualitatively and brought good results, we cooperate with Samsung, Huawei, LG, ASUS and other companies — said in Google.

Along with ARCore, the company develops other applications and services which are intended to help developers to create solutions in the field of augmented reality. So, Google started the Blocks and Tilt Brush projects that everyone with ease could create 3D - content for AR-applications, at the Google I/O conference announced work on service of visual positioning (Visual Positioning Service) which will allow to display use of technology of augmented reality in the world out of computer limits.

According to Google, the key role in development of augmented reality will belong to the Internet. Therefore we start prototypes of browsers for web developer that they could begin to experiment with this technology too. Specialized browsers allow to create the websites with support of augmented reality for Android/ARCore and IOS/ARKit. ARCore became the next step of the company making augmented reality available to everyone.
