2024: Identify a vulnerability through which devices can be remotely managed
In July 2024, it became known about a serious vulnerability in the push-button phones of the Russian brand Digma, which allows you to remotely control devices. Cybersecurity experts have discovered a built-in flaw that allows attackers to control the phone over the Internet, including sending and receiving SMS, as well as registering accounts in instant messengers without the owner's knowledge.
According to Kommersant, the vulnerability, known as the "backdoor," was identified after one of the users encountered unauthorized WhatsApp registration on his new Digma device. Analysis of the gadget's firmware confirmed the presence of malicious functions introduced to use the owner's phone number for unknown purposes.
According to a source in the cybersecurity industry, infected phones periodically contact a remote server, transmitting an IMEI device identifier, SIM card data and a telecom operator. In response, the server can send commands to perform various actions, including sending SMS with the specified text to certain numbers.
Representatives of Digma and Merlion, which owns the brand, declined to comment on the situation. However, in correspondence with the user who discovered the problem, Digma acknowledged the presence of "anomalies" in the operation of the device's firmware, without confirming the existence of the vulnerability.
Anatoly Peskovsky, a specialist in the Cyber Threat Modeling and Research Department of Informzaschita, emphasizes that the threat can arise both from an unscrupulous manufacturer and software supplier, and after repair or self-firmware of the device.
Mikhail Sergeyev, a leading CorpSoft24 engineer, warns of the serious consequences of exploiting this vulnerability. Attackers can gain full control over the phone, which will allow them to steal data, send spam and even gain access to banking applications and user services. The expert emphasizes that if the situation is not resolved, this can lead to massive leaks of confidential information.[1]
