Import substitution of equipment in the garbage industry reached 90%
In the garbage industry of Russia, significant progress has been made in the import substitution of equipment, which is now 90%. This was announced on June 10, 2024 by the general director of the Russian environmental operator Denis Butsaev. In particular, we are talking about technologies for recycling garbage.
According to Butsaev, since the launch of the garbage reform in 2019, dependence on foreign equipment has decreased from 65% to 10%, which is an important achievement for the industry. This process made it possible to almost completely eliminate critical dependence on imports.
In theHe noted that foreign partners are also showing interest in Russian technologies. Negotiations are underway with representatives of ASEAN countries and Africa on the export of Russian equipment. This indicates the competitiveness of domestic developments in the international market.
According to regional operators, dependence on foreign equipment and equipment has really noticeably decreased. Svetlana Turishcheva, a representative of the Stavropol housing and communal services operator, noted that the fleet of equipment now mainly consists of domestic garbage trucks based on Kamaz and MAZ, as well as Chinese equipment, which has become a worthy alternative to European brands. However, the operator still uses equipment purchased during the pre-sanction period, which creates difficulties with the purchase of spare parts.
Butsaev said that a similar situation is observed in the Ryazan regional operator, which in the past three years has been purchasing exclusively domestic equipment for waste sorting lines and garbage reloading stations. Imported equipment, which makes up about 10%, comes mainly from Belarus and China.
At the same time, the fleets of transport operators also mainly consist of Russian cars. Victoria Sirotkina, a representative of the Arkhangelsk re-operator Ecointegrator, stressed that the use of domestic containers and automated waste management systems can reduce costs and ensure compliance with sanitary standards.[1]

2017: Digital sales for recycling industry reach $322m
According to forecasts, by 2020, the volume of the global digital transformation technology market in the field of solid municipal waste management (MSW) in monetary terms will increase to $3.6 billion from $3.3 billion in 2017. At the same time, the average annual growth rate (CAGR) of this market will be 2.74%. Such data were published on October 3, 2018 by Frost & Sullivan based on the results of a study by The Impact of Digital Transformation on the Waste Recycling Industry.
The development of the digital solutions market in the waste recycling industry goes in four main areas, the company said in a report: the production of smart waste collection systems (the so-called "smart containers"); optimization of supply chains and equipping the fleet with specialized software and sensors ("smart garbage collectors"); production and implementation of intelligent MSW recycling and disposal systems; as well as the development and application of cloud technologies and user interfaces.
In total, in 2017, the volume of the digital technology market in the waste collection and transportation segments was estimated by Frost & Sullivan experts at $322 million - $96.6 and 225.4 million, respectively. By 2020, according to analysts' forecasts, it may increase to $360 million.
As of October 2018, the largest number of smart technologies and waste management equipment is being developed in Western Europe and North America. In addition to smart containers and garbage collectors, they also include robotic systems for sorting MSW, specialized mobile applications, accounting and analytics systems, software, etc.
The largest segment of the market remains the development of cloud computing platforms, user interfaces and software - in 2017 it accounted for $2.8 billion, while the share of MSW intelligent processing systems - about $138 million. At the same time, the pace of digitalization in the processing segment remains one of the highest - according to our forecasts, by 2020 the volume of this market will amount to $232 million, - said Alexey Volostnov, Managing Director of Frost & Sullivan in Russia. |
Among the main trends in the digital transformation technology market in the field of MSW management, Frost & Sullivan analysts name the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), the Smart City concept, as well as the Platform as a Service business models ( online services with the ability to choose services based on individual requirements) and Software as a service ( a set of functions or software solutions that can be equipped with technological equipment).
The development of these trends takes place against the background of the need to solve the existing problems of the industry, such as the lack (or complete absence) of information on the number of MSW collected and processed, the underdevelopment of infrastructure and services in certain countries and regions, a stable increase in transport costs of companies, a low level of technological equipment of enterprises, etc., - added Volostnov. |
According to him, the main driver of digitalization of the industry will be the development of partnerships between IT and waste recycling companies and, as a result, an increase in the number of joint projects. One of the striking examples is projects in the field of MSW collection and transportation. Garbage containers are equipped with special RFID sensors that transmit information about the degree of its filling. In turn, garbage collection cars (or the so-called "smart garbage collectors") are equipped with special equipment and software that allows you to optimize logistics routes, and thereby reduce fuel consumption and driving time.
Frost & Sullivan estimates that more than 50 large IT and technology companies are developing smart technologies and equipment for the collection, transportation and processing of waste in the world.
In the segment of production of intelligent systems for sorting MSW processing, Alexey Volostnov noted, in particular, the companies ZenRobotics (production of robotics for scanning and sorting waste, including construction) and Sadako Technologies (robotic system MAX-AI for sorting MSW). He also included Steinert Global, AMP Robotics, OEM Sherbrooke, Recycle Track Systems, Cleanrobotics, etc.
As the study showed, Rubicon Global, AMCS Group, Waste Management, Suez, Enevo, Trinov, Winnow Solutions are leading among the manufacturers of specialized software.
In turn, Compology, Bigbelly, Plastic Omnium, Busch Sytems, Enva, Fleetminds, MOBA Group, Telogis, Trux, Routesmart Technologies and others remain the leading global players in the field of intelligent technologies for waste collection and transportation.
