2017: Digital sales for recycling industry reach $322m

According to forecasts, by 2020, the volume of the global digital transformation technology market in the field of solid municipal waste management (MSW) in monetary terms will increase to $3.6 billion from $3.3 billion in 2017. At the same time, the average annual growth rate (CAGR) of this market will be 2.74%. The development of the digital solutions market in the waste recycling industry goes in four main areas, the company said in a report: the production of smart waste collection systems (the so-called "smart containers"); optimization of supply chains and equipping the fleet with specialized software and sensors ("smart garbage collectors"); production and implementation of intelligent MSW recycling and disposal systems; as well as the development and application of cloud technologies and user interfaces.

In total, in 2017, the volume of the digital technology market in the waste collection and transportation segments was estimated by Frost & Sullivan experts at $322 million - $96.6 and 225.4 million, respectively. By 2020, according to analysts' forecasts, it may increase to $360 million.

As of October 2018, the largest number of smart technologies and waste management equipment is being developed in Western Europe and North America. In addition to smart containers and garbage collectors, they also include robotic systems for sorting MSW, specialized mobile applications, accounting and analytics systems, software, etc.

According to him, the main driver of digitalization of the industry will be the development of partnerships between IT and waste recycling companies and, as a result, an increase in the number of joint projects. One of the striking examples is projects in the field of MSW collection and transportation. Garbage containers are equipped with special RFID sensors that transmit information about the degree of its filling. In turn, garbage collection cars (or the so-called "smart garbage collectors") are equipped with special equipment and software that allows you to optimize logistics routes, and thereby reduce fuel consumption and driving time.

Frost & Sullivan estimates that more than 50 large IT and technology companies are developing smart technologies and equipment for the collection, transportation and processing of waste in the world.

In the segment of production of intelligent systems for sorting MSW processing, Alexey Volostnov noted, in particular, the companies ZenRobotics (production of robotics for scanning and sorting waste, including construction) and Sadako Technologies (robotic system MAX-AI for sorting MSW).
