Russia is in 32nd place in terms of organized crime among the countries that are members of the United Nations (UN). The corresponding rating was published by the international organization GITOC. Experts evaluated states on two main parameters:

  • crime rate, including the scale of criminal groups and their influence on different spheres of life of the country, the structure and influence of criminal groups in different types (mafia, criminal networks, criminality related to state bodies, foreign crime);
  • ability to counter organized crime.

The document notes that more than 350 experts from around the world participated in its compilation, including journalists, scientists, researchers and representatives of civil society.

Russia's closest neighbors in the table are Vietnam and Ecuador (here the crime situation is a little worse), as well as Serbia and Ukraine (in these countries organized crime is a little weaker). Italy is located in 53rd place (highest among the countries of Western Europe), France - in 59th, USA - in 64th, Germany - in 95th, Great Britain - in 99th.

Regarding Congo, as the most criminal country on the planet, an armed conflict has been going on there for many years. The military is forced to confront numerous force groups, including the United Democratic Forces, based in neighboring Uganda. The State Army of the Congo periodically manages to conduct successful military operations against militants, but they are not able to control the situation in the eastern provinces on an ongoing basis, as a result of which individual areas are constantly under the control of armed groups.

The Global Organized Crime Index is the result of a two-year effort to assess crime rates and resilience in all 193 UN member states. It is hoped that thanks to these data, the index will help develop a truly global response to the widespread threat of transnational organized crime, the explanatory note to the study says.[1]
