2025: Dismissal of half of employees
In mid-May 2025, it became known that Japan Display, Japan's largest display manufacturer, intends to conduct a large-scale reorganization. The programme will see more than half of staff laid off in the home region, with CEO Scott Callon stepping down.
As of early 2025, Japan Display had a staff of approximately 2,640 in Japan. At the same time, it is planned to reduce about 1,500 employees, or over 55%. The company will abolish jobs, including by early retirement of employees. Japan Display also plans to lay off employees abroad.
The need for restructuring is due to the deterioration of the financial situation. Japan Display reported a consolidated net loss of 78.2 billion yen ($538 million at the exchange rate as of May 16, 2025) for the closed fiscal year, while a year earlier the loss was 44.3 billion yen. The company's LCD business has faced stiff competition from Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers. Japan Display is exploring opportunities to diversify its activities, including entering the semiconductor products housing segment.
Our cost structure remains high and does not correspond to the market situation. We were unable to respond properly to the decline in sales, "Kallon said. |
Taking responsibility for the deterioration of the results, Callon made the decisions to resign from June 1, 2025. Jun Akema, head of procurement at Japan Display, will take over the CEO duties. He will also take over as president of the company. It is assumed that the reorganization will help improve the financial situation and optimize operating activities.[1]
