Firesprite is a video game developer created by former Studio Liverpool employees from Liverpool, UK.

History

2021: Sony bought Firesprite

In mid-September 2021, Sony announced the acquisition of the British studio Firesprite, the developer of the games The Playroom and The Playroom VR.

As of September 13, 2021, it remains unclear what projects the Firesprite studio will work on in a new capacity, but it is known what awaits it in the near future.

Firesprite's ability to weave the best-in-class gameplay with new technologies is exceptional, and I think fans will be delighted with their creative vision of the future. It's too early to talk about specific platforms or impressions that we are going to collaborate on with Firesprite, "said Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, in a press release.

Sony acquired Firesprite

Firespite was founded by employees of the Liverpool studio, Sony Interactive Entertainment so there are already close ties between the two companies. Although Firesprite's experience with The Playroom VR may indicate that the company is working on a next-generation PlayStation headset game VR from Sony, Hermen Hulst did not say anything in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

Sony has always had strong internal teams and not all of them were created from scratch, this corresponds to how Sony conducted business in other areas. Closing unproductive studios and updating them with new ones, which they either collected from various parts or acquired after a long-term relationship or joint cooperation on individual projects.

Firespite will be the 14th studio in the PlayStation Studios line. This acquisition is the third in a number of purchases that Sony is actively making. In June 2021, Sony acquired the developer Return Housemarque, and in July 2021 the Dutch studio Nixxes. Other PlayStation Studios include major names such as developers Ratchet & Clank - Insomniac Games, Horizon Zero Dawn - Guerrilla Games and The Last of Us - Naughty Dog.[1]
