On June 24, 2020 Olympus announced sale of the division of Imaging specializing in development and sale of cameras and digital dictophones. This business buys the Japanese investment fund Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) which purchased computer assets of Vaio at Sony earlier.

The cost of the transaction between Olympus and JIP does not reveal. Besides, it is not specified whether is going Olympus to save a share in it after sale of the photodivision. Sony, for example, under the terms of the transaction with JIP, owns a 5 percent share in Vaio.

The division of Olympus on production of cameras was unprofitable for three years in a row. As more and more people prefer to use cameras in smartphones, Olympus share in the market of cameras was considerably reduced. The measures for cost reduction taken by the company did not yeild tangible results.

According to the results of the financial year which came to the end in March of the 2020th calendar only 5.5% of revenue of all corporation Olympus fell to the share of this division. According to The Wall Street Journal, in 2019 Olympus earned about $400 million revenue whereas in 2007 this indicator was $3 billion from sale of cameras. Against the background of this recession the decision to sell division of Olympus Imaging was made.

Having abandoned the market of cameras, Olympus will concentrate on release of the medical equipment. At this JIP will continue to develop the Olympus brands, such as OM-D cameras and lenses of ZUIKO. The Olympus company made cameras since 1934.[1]
