2023: 3.3% reduction in road accidents
The development of a photo and video recording system in St. Petersburg led to a decrease in road accidents by 3.3% in 2023. This was announced by the Committee for Informatization and Communications of St. Petersburg on January 15, 2024.
The number ROAD ACCIDENT on the streets of St. Petersburg in 2023 decreased by 3.3% compared to the previous same period, to data TRAFFIC POLICE MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS in the city. The trend towards a decrease in accident rate has been recorded for the third year and is associated, among other things cameras , with the expansion of the photo and video recording system: in 2023, the number on the city's roads increased by almost 40%.
The photo and video recording system (FVF) in St. Petersburg has been developing since 2021. Software and hardware complexes are installed on the roads in all districts of the city, including the A-118 Ring Road and the Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD). In total, at the beginning of 2024, more than 1,350 FVF complexes were operating in St. Petersburg, which operate in the most emergency places. They are determined by the traffic police of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, cameras on the roads record up to 90% of violations that fell into the official statistics of the department. Therefore, data from FVF systems can sufficiently reliably reflect the safety situation. At the end of 2023, the traffic police in St. Petersburg noted a decrease in the number of accidents by 3.3% compared to the same indicator in 2022.
In total, in 2023, FVF complexes recorded more than 10 million violations. Of the total number of violations, 91% are exceeding the speed limit. For the same period in 2022, about 9 million traffic violations were recorded.
Even with an increase in the total number of recorded violations, the results of 2023 confirm the trend towards a decrease in accident rate, which began in 2021: the number of accidents then decreased by 4.2%, and in 2022 - by 16.5%. The trend is associated, among other things, with the start of the first street cameras. In 2023, more than 390 complexes were installed in St. Petersburg, expanding the city FVF system by almost 40%. Thus, cameras appeared at 78 intersections, including the installation of complexes for fixing traffic violations at seven intersections on the main artery of the city - Nevsky Prospekt.
In addition, in 2023, work was underway in St. Petersburg to modernize the existing photo and video recording system. For example, 18 complexes on the Western high-speed diameter were integrated with the special software "Web," which, due to working with the databases of the portal "Public services," the federal treasury and "Russian Post," accumulates information about the movement of all vehicles. SPO is used to search for stolen cars, as well as cars hiding from road accidents.
Automation of the process of fixing traffic violations is a very eloquent example of how digital tools make the lives of citizens safer, better. Technology makes it possible to achieve the inevitability of punishment for the offender, which is the best promotion of safe driving. According to the statistics of road accidents in St. Petersburg, we see that the number of accidents is constantly decreasing against the background of the expansion of the photo and video recording system. This also affects the overall decrease in the number of victims on the roads. So, in 2023, the number of deaths in road accidents decreased by 6.4%, and the number of victims - by 11%. In 2024, we will continue our policy and plan to install about 100 more new FVF complexes, - said Stanislav Kazarin, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg. |
