Launch of VoWiFi technology in Moscow
T2, the Russian mobile operator, communications launched VoWiFi technology in the capital in 2025, increased its transmission rate data by 60%, began to bring the LTE2300 range to the metro and ended the year with zero first priority accidents. T2 provided indoor coverage at key metropolitan facilities and installed the necessary equipment for the opening of new stations Moscow Metro.. The operator announced this on January 30, 2026. One of the most important launches of 2025 in the capital was VoWiFi - the technology is automatically available to all users whose devices support calls by. Wi-Fi More here.
VoWiFi implementation in 64 regions
T2 has completed the implementation of VoWiFi in 64 regions of presence. In less than six months, the company launched a special project: weekly technical specialists withdrew up to 13 regions. The technology can be especially relevant in the context of restrictions on calls in foreign messengers for communication with contacts abroad. This was announced by T2 on August 20 and 2025.
With the introduction of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) technology, T2 customers were able to make and receive calls even with a weak or missing signal from external base stations - now it is enough to have a connection to a Wi-Fi network to call.
Work on connecting VoWiFi began in March 2025 - then the option appeared in Tambov and Stavropol, then the technology became available to residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Up to 13 regions were withdrawn weekly by technical specialists. As with the introduction of VoLTE in 2024, T2 set the task of providing subscribers with technology as soon as possible: the work took less than six months.
The technology is already active in 64 regions of presence T2 and is automatically available to all users whose devices support VoWiFi. To connect, just enable the function in the phone settings. The technology is especially relevant for use in remote regions, office buildings, basement apartments and other areas with limited signal reception. VoWiFi calls are charged as normal voice traffic, there is no additional fee for using the service.
{{quote 'author=said Aleksei Dmitriyev, technical director of T2. | The launch of VoWiFi technology in all regions of T2 presence is an important stage in the development of our technological infrastructure and expansion of opportunities for our customers. We create conditions under which the quality of communication does not depend on the geography and exact location of a person: whether it is the center of a busy metropolis or the basement of a remote settlement, the subscriber receives stable and clear voice communication through any Wi-Fi network. This is a new level of availability and reliability of mobile services for each T2 customer,}}
Launch in Moscow and St. Petersburg
T2 implemented Voice over Wi-Fi technology in Moscow and St. Petersburg. This service allows you to make calls over the Wi-Fi network where mobile communication may not be available: in buildings with thick walls, basements, high-rises or during a trip abroad. The service is also open to residents of the Stavropol Territory and the Tambov Region. The company plans to introduce VoWiFi technology in all regions of its presence within a few months. The T2 announced this on April 7, 2025.
In December 2024, T2 completed the implementation of VoLTE in the regions of its presence and set about introducing another technology for an alternative way of making calls - Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi). The Tambov region has become a test region for launch. A successful pilot helped introduce VoWiFi in the Stavropol Territory, on the day of launch. At the end of March 2025, the option became also available to residents of Moscow and the Moscow region, in early April - in St. Petersburg.
In total, VoWiFi T2 technology has potentially opened up to more than 33 million people. Since the beginning of March, more than 6 million calls have passed over the Wi-Fi network in connected regions, of which 3.5 million have been in Moscow over the past two weeks. To successfully implement the service, the technical department has improved voice and packet switching systems in technical macro-regions. Due to this, the T2 reduced the time to establish a connection between subscribers, provided improved sound quality, stable communication and information transmission without interference, echo and noise.
VoWiFi allows you to use a standard Wi-Fi network for calls if there is no mobile network coverage. The technology is especially relevant for those who can be in basements, on the upper floors of high-rises or abroad, that is, in places where a router is used instead of a signal from operator networks to access the network.
To use Voice over Wi-Fi, the subscriber should make sure that his mobile device supports VoLTE and VoWiFi, and the technologies themselves are activated in the internal settings of the gadget. VoWiFi calls are charged as regular voice traffic, there is no additional fee for using the service.
{{quote 'author=noted Aleksei Dmitriyev, technical director of T2. | The launch of VoWiFi technology was a logical continuation of our massive VoLTE launch in 2024. We also expect to implement Voice over Wi-Fi in all regions of the presence as soon as possible - within a few months. Lfyyfz technology not only expands the experience of using stable voice communication, but also allows you to save money on trips around Russia and abroad, since with this type of calls minutes are spent from the client package at no additional cost,}}
