Admission of applicants to medical universities in Russia increased by 35 thousand people

In early October 2024, the Russian Ministry of Health summed up the results of the admission campaign to medical universities in the country. Compared to the previous year, the number of applicants enrolled in the first year increased by more than 35 thousand people, which indicates the growing popularity of medical specialties among young people.

According to Medvestnik, Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko announced a significant increase in the competition for admission to medical universities. In 2024, this figure reached 13 people per place, which is 0.5 points higher than in 2023. The average score of applicants also rose by two points.

Growth of applicants to Russian medical universities by 35 thousand people

The total number of budget places in medical universities increased by 1.7 thousand compared to the previous year. This allowed more applicants to be accepted for free education. The minister also noted an increase in the number of foreign students choosing Russian medical universities for higher education.

Particular attention was paid to the high level of training of applicants. In 2024, about 500 Olympiad winners were enrolled in the first year, which indicates the attraction of talented youth to the medical sphere.

The country's leading medical universities in 2024 significantly increased the admission of students under the quota for participants in the special military operation and their children. The leader in this indicator was the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov, who accepted 154 people in this quota.

Despite the general increase in the number of applicants, some educational institutions faced the need to extend the deadlines for accepting documents for residency, including extra-budgetary places. This may be due to a low competition for individual specialties, which led to the transfer of unfilled target places to the general competition.[1]

Moscow medical universities sharply increased prices for training

In July 2024, it became known that the leading medical universities in Moscow significantly increased the cost of training for the academic year 2024-2025. The most noticeable price increase is observed in the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov, where annual training in the specialty "Medical Business" has risen in price by 30.8% - from ₽650 thousand to ₽850 thousand.

According to an analysis of price lists on the websites of educational institutions conducted by Medvestnik, a full six-year course of study in the specialty "Medical Affairs" at Sechenov University will now cost students more than ₽5,6 million, which is 27.3% more than in 2023. The cost of training in the specialty "Dentistry" has also increased: the first year now costs ₽900 thousand instead of the previous ₽700 thousand.

Moscow medical schools sharply increased prices for training

The Russian University of Medicine (formerly Moscow State Medical University named after N.I. Evdokimova) also raised prices for training. The year of training in the specialty "Medical Business" has risen in price by 39.5% - from ₽430 thousand to ₽600 thousand. The cost of training in the specialty "Dentistry" increased from ₽520 thousand to ₽750 thousand per year.

At the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov, the cost of a year of training in the specialty "Medical Care" increased by 27.7% - from ₽470 thousand to ₽600 thousand.. Training in the specialty "Dentistry" now costs ₽650 thousand instead of the previous ₽470 thousand per year.

The increase in prices affected not only the programs of the specialty, but also the residency. At Sechenov University, the cost of studying in residency increased by an average of ₽40 thousand, and in some areas, such as Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dermatovenerology, Dentistry, by ₽100 thousand..

The first Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov is one of the largest medical universities in Russia. In 2022, 3095 applicants were enrolled in the first year of this university, of which more than 1.9 thousand were enrolled in the budget form of study.[2]

2023

Reduction of the number of graduates to 27.8 thousand people

In October 2024, it became known that the Institute for Statistical Research and Knowledge Economics of the Higher School of Economics published a collection "Education in Numbers," which noted a decrease in the number of residency graduates in a number of key medical specialties in Russia in 2023. According to the presented data, the most noticeable decrease is observed among obstetricians-gynecologists and therapists.

According to Medvestnik, the number of obstetricians-gynecologists who completed their residency decreased from 1.6 thousand to 1.4 thousand people, and the number of therapists decreased from 2 thousand to 1.8 thousand. There was also a decrease in the number of graduates in the specialties of neurology (from 1.2 thousand to 1 thousand) and orthopedic dentistry (from 1.2 thousand to 1.1 thousand).

The only specialty in which there is an increase in the number of graduates was anesthesiology-resuscitation - from 1.6 thousand to 1.7 thousand people. At the same time, the total number of graduates of residency in clinical medicine increased from 26.8 thousand in 2022 to 27.1 thousand in 2023.

These statistics are of concern against the background of the existing shortage of medical personnel in Russia. According to the Russian Society of Obstetricians-Gynecologists, 5.3 thousand obstetricians-gynecologists and neonatologists are missing in state medical institutions. Taking into account midwives, the total deficit is estimated at 8.5-11.5 thousand specialists.

A study of the Headhunter service, conducted in 2023, showed that a shortage of medical personnel is observed in all regions of the country. The most popular specialists are therapists, pediatricians and dentists.

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said in May 2024 that it would take at least 5-6 years to solve the problem of personnel shortages in healthcare. According to official estimates, in 2022 the total shortage of doctors in Russia was about 25-26 thousand people, and the average medical staff - about 50 thousand.[3]

16 thousand foreigners entered universities of the Ministry of Health

In 2023, more than 16 thousand foreign citizens from 107 states entered universities of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation for training in bachelor's, specialty and master's programs. Such data were disclosed by the Russian department in early February 2024.

According Sheets to the newspaper Russia "," 19,430 applications from foreigners through the line were received for training in medical specialties in the academic year 2023/24. Rossotrudnichestvo For the 2024/25 academic year, as of the beginning of February 2024, the number of such applications is 19,414. At the same time, every year Rossotrudnichestvo issues only about 3,000 directions for study, which is explained by the insufficient capacity of educational organizations. According to the deputy head of Rossotrudnichestvo Pavel Shevtsov, for foreign students, training in medical specialties in Russia is one of the priority areas.

Unfortunately, we are forced to limit this area of training, since there are difficulties in terms of material equipment. If we could, we would take everyone, but we have no opportunity, - said Shevtsov.

In accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Health, a certain material and technical base is required for each applicant: simulation centers, teaching aids, as well as special devices. In addition, if necessary, accommodation in a hostel should be organized. In this regard, training is very expensive.

Most international medical students are said to be returning to their home countries after completing their studies. The fact is that either the state or employers who wait for graduates back pay for training their citizens in the Russian Federation most often. At the same time, the growing popularity of Russian medical universities by foreign students leads to an increase in the cost of education.[4]
