Tripling user spending on games to $240.8 million
The revenue of development companies in the Russian mobile games market in 2022 amounted to $240.8 million ($343 million before the deduction of the 30% commission of the App Store and Google Play) against $736.1 million ($1.05 billion, respectively) a year earlier. This is evidenced by the data of the research company data.ai (formerly App Annie), which were released in June 2023.
As Vedomosti writes with reference to this study, its authors call the proceeds the amount of funds spent by users from Russian accounts inside games minus the commission, the company's website says. It also follows from the report that the number of downloads of mobile games in 2022 in Russia decreased slightly (by 4%), to 2.6 billion.
The top 5 games in terms of downloads included projects Subway Surfers, Roblox, Geometry Dash, Going Balls and Durak Online. It is noted that in Russia the same games are mainly popular as around the world (with the exception of the US market, which has its own specifics).
The newspaper recalls that in the spring of 2022, the Google Play store blocked the ability to make purchases in Russia, but the company allowed using external payment methods, while the App Store retained payment from the phone balance and gift cards. Since many manufacturers smartphones are not so negative about the ability to openly earn money in Russia, there are a lot of branded marketplaces in which you can link cards, World"" pay for purchases with wallets Qiwi and valid cards, and Visa Mastercard Union Pay. We are talking about stores (App Oppo Market), (Samsung Galaxy Store), (App Vivo Store), (Xiaomi GetApps) and (Huawei AppGallery) and sites from other manufacturers.
However, limiting the ability to make payments has become only one of the factors in the fall of this market segment. Vengeance Games points out that there is also a global trend in the fall in the volume of the mobile game market. In Europe and the United States, it is 4% in monetary terms and up to 3% in the number of downloads.
Among the reasons for the reduction in the number of downloads are the decline after the covid (we are talking about the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic) boom, as well as the fall in the hypercasual games market. In addition, the indicator was influenced by a decrease in the number of gamers due to relocation in 2022, experts interviewed by the publication assure.
The founder of the Vengeance Games studio, Konstantin Sakhnov, notes that if the opportunity to pay returns in the next two years, then the volume of payments in mobile games may recover by 80%. Longer restrictions will negatively affect consumer culture, weaning Russians from buying in games and legally acquiring content, he concluded.
There is also a decrease in demand for hypercasual games, said Vasily Ovchinnikov, head of the Video Game Industry Development Organization.
According to Mediascope for 2022, 69% of Russians aged 12 to 64 at least sometimes play games on various devices, while 55% regularly do so. Most often, Russians play games on smartphones - 42%. In addition, the study showed that 68% of Russian mobile phone users of this age play on this device at least once a month, and 40% enter at least one mobile game daily. It is natural that games are one of the leading categories of mobile applications in terms of usage time: with a share of 15%, they share 2nd place with video resources. Only social networks are ahead of the games - they have 29%.[1]
The number of downloads of mobile games in Russia decreased by 11%
The number of downloads of mobile games in Russia in 2022 decreased by 11% compared to 2021. This is evidenced by data from analysts at Sensor Tower, released in March 2023.
Experts did not specify the absolute number of downloads of mobile games per year. Only the figure for the fourth quarter of 2022 is given - 673 million, which approximately corresponds to the level of a year ago. And despite the decline in the spring and summer of 2022, Russia remained the largest market in Europe: in the fourth quarter, it accounted for 24% of downloads of games for smartphones and tablets in the region.
It is noted that in-game payments through the App Store and Google Play in Russia fell by 72% in 2022 compared to 2021. This was largely due to payment restrictions in the App Store and Google Play.
A source Kommersant from the gaming sphere noted that the developers present in the Russian Federation in 2022 began to actively connect the transition from the application to the browser version. Some publishers were even able to increase revenue thanks to this payment method.
Experts interviewed by the newspaper note that you can trace the trend in the revival of the direction of browser games, close to mobile gaming. In addition, the restrictions on payment platforms have given the prospect for the development of alternative points of aggregation and monetization of the audience. Alexey Koptsev, CEO and founder of Cyberia Nova studio, adds that to improve the monetization of games in Russia, not only convenient payment tools should appear, but also a "habit of using these tools," and alternative Russian app stores for Android should offer an assortment "no worse than in the App Store and Google Play."[2]
