Main article: Monitors (Russian market)

2023

Sales of computer monitors in the world for the year sank by 7.3% to 125 million units

In 2023, sales of computer monitors on a global scale amounted to about 125 million units. This is 7.3% less than in the previous year, when shipments were estimated at 135 million units. Such data are given in the TrendForce study, the results of which TAdviser got acquainted with at the end of September 2024.

Analysts note that in the first half of 2022, Europe and the United States saw a surge in business orders, which were previously postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Quarantine restrictions have led to production difficulties and disruption of supply chains. As a result, in 2022, outstanding orders led to a significant increase in supplies in the commercial sector. However, by 2023, demand in this market has significantly decreased. As a result, sales from many leading computer monitor manufacturers have dropped significantly.

In particular, Dell shipments in 2023 decreased by 20.4% compared to the previous year, HP - by 20.7%, Lenovo - by 21.4%. These manufacturers are among the leaders in the corporate segment. BenQ recorded a 22.8% decline in sales. LG has a fall of 12.6% on an annualized basis, Samsung - by 11.8%. In addition, Asus faced a 3.9% drop.

However, according to the study, some consumer brands defied the trend and showed growth in supplies in 2023. In particular , AOC/Philips benefited from the high demand in the gaming market, China showing an increase in shipments by 8.8% compared to 2022. Acer updated its monitor families, raising their frequency to 100 Hz from 60/75 Hz with a minimum price difference, which led to a 6.7% increase in supply. The company MSI increased sales by 5.2%, and - ViewSonic by 2.2%.

According to TrendForce analysts, given the low supply base in 2023 and the potential for a gradual economic recovery, the global computer monitor market will return to growth in 2024. Positive dynamics will also be provided by a typical 4-5-year PC replacement cycle: computers purchased during the pandemic are expected to be actively updated from the second half of 2024 to 2025. This will lead to an increase in global shipments of monitors by 2% in 2024 with a final result of approximately 128 million units.

TrendForce also notes that monitor delivery targets among commercial and consumer brands are predominantly conservative. In particular, AOC/Philips, MSI, Asus and Acer in 2024 expect to show growth in the range from 10% to 13.6%. In turn, Dell, HP, Samsung, LG, ViewSonic and BenQ believe that year-on-year growth will vary from 2.1% to 6.9%. However, Lenovo has set higher goals, aiming to increase annual sales of PC monitors by about 20%.

In general, analysts cite several factors that will contribute to the increase in global shipments. These are the emergence of new models of monitors with improved technical characteristics, lower prices for devices with a large screen size and continued demand for panels for gaming desktop systems. In addition, the transition of businesses to Windows 11 PCs and the return of many employees to offices after pandemic restrictions is expected to lead to increased demand in the commercial sector. Experts believe that the growth rate in the business segment will surpass the consumer sector in 2024 and 2025. After that, the indicators of increase in sales volumes are predicted at a small level.[1]

8.6% market drop

At the end of 2023, the global market for monitors for personal computers decreased by 8.6% compared to the previous year. Such data are given in the IDC study, the results of which were released on March 21, 2024.

Analysts say all major regions have seen year-on-year growth by the end of 2023, excluding China. Game panels accounted for almost 16% of all monitor shipments in 2023. Fierce competition has been reported in the mid-range monitor segment.

The IDC study notes that global monitor sales reached 31.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2023. That equates to a 3.8% year-on-year increase. The market recovery came after five quarters of annual decline amid the elimination of excess stocks left over from the COVID-19 pandemic. By the end of 2023, all key segments of the industry showed growth, with the consumer sector ahead of the commercial sector. There is an improvement in demand for monitors for the mass market and premium segment.

Overall, more stable performance in the second half of 2023 helped offset a sharp decline in the first half, when monitor shipments fell 17.4%, the IDC study said.

The list of leading monitor manufacturers includes Dell Technologies, TPV, Lenovo, HP and Samsung. IDC analysts believe that demand for monitors will grow until 2025. As stimulating factors are the reduction in prices for models with a large screen, the emergence of devices with a high display refresh rate and the growing need for panels for gaming-class computers. In addition, it is expected that the transition of companies and organizations to PCs with Windows 11 will help increase sales of monitors in the commercial segment.[2]

2021: Global monitor sales top since 2012

The volume of the global computer monitor market in 2021 reached 143.6 million units, which is 5% more than a year earlier. Sales of this equipment have grown among many major manufacturers, except for the Chinese TPV and the American HP Inc. Such data are contained in a study by the analytical company IDC, which was released on March 28, 2022.

Global monitor shipments in 2021 were the highest since 2012, when shipments measured 150.3 million units, experts said. In the first half of 2021, device sales increased by 19.4%, but in the second half of the year demand weakened greatly, so at the end of the year, the market could not demonstrate the impressive dynamics that was registered in January-June.

2021 marked the end of the longest rise in the monitor market, which has not been interrupted since 2018, says IDC analyst Jay Chou. - Whether it's updates to PCs and monitors by businesses in connection with the introduction of Windows 10 or the transition from office to remote work during a pandemic, these events have given the industry, which was previously characterized by restraint, the necessary impetus. However, now we see that the growing saturation, inflationary pressure provoked by the pandemic and the crisis in Ukraine are further hindering the already slowing market in 2022, as a result of which we expect a 3.6% drop in monitor supplies with further stabilization.
File:Aquote2.png

The problems that monitor suppliers faced in the third quarter persisted in the final quarter. The pace of growth in mature markets slowed, but the negative trend partially offset emerging markets, which were catching up with the lag. Plus, the commercial segment helped smooth out consumer weakness. However, despite some improvement with the supply of components for monitors, the increased costs of cargo delivery and disruptions in Asian supply chains continued to complicate the situation. Analysts believe that the listed difficulties will spread to 2022, which will lead to a 3.6% reduction in the market.

According to the researchers, despite the weakening demand for monitors by the end of 2021, the corporate sector as a whole showed good results in the market due to the fact that companies began to return to office work after the massive transition to remote work due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Dell Technologies remains the world's largest computer monitor manufacturer in 2021. Moreover, the share of the American vendor on an annualized basis increased by almost 2 percentage points.

Major Monitor Manufacturers Globally, IDC Data

As noted in IDC, those manufacturers that have better control over their supply chains or have a strong presence in developing countries have achieved more success than competitors who cannot boast of the same. Monitors betting on the consumer segment of the market suffered the most, since sales of such equipment in 2021 decreased by more than 8%. Largely due to a decrease in demand for monitors from individuals, sales of this equipment from HP Inc. in 2021 decreased by 18.5%, as a result of which the company was in fourth place among the leading manufacturers instead of the third in 2020.[3]

During the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, consumer demand was the main catalyst for the monitor market, while in past years the supply of equipment to the company was decisive. The share of the corporate sector in the monitor market exceeded 60%, and in 2021 it turned out to be lower than that of the consumer segment. The leadership of the latter is associated with the popularity of gaming equipment and the trend of switching to remote work, analysts say.

2020

Gaming computers and monitors market growth by 26.8%, supply volume - 55 million units

The market for gaming computers and monitors in 2020 registered record volumes of supplies and growth rates - 55 million units and 26.8%, respectively. Such data are provided in the research company IDC.

According to experts, the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic contributed to the surge in demand for gaming computer equipment, due to which people began to stay at home more often and, as a result, play more.

The IDC estimated that in 2020, 14.3 million gaming monitors arrived on the global market, which is 77% higher than a year ago.

Monitor market growth by 8.3%, to 135.6 million units - IDC

The volume of the global computer monitor market at the end of 2020 reached 135.6 million units, an increase of 8.3% compared to the previous year. This was reported in the research company IDC.

According to experts, this growth in monitor sales on a global scale was the strongest since IDC began monitoring this market in 2008.

Analysts linked the surge in demand for monitors to the trend of people switching to a remote format of work and training. In addition, a shortage of components for displays, such as chips for LCD panels, and an increase in transportation prices contributed to the rise. Under these conditions, some manufacturers decided to replenish the warehouse stocks of monitors, anticipating a rise in price of parts, which, according to researchers, will last until mid-2021. As a result, buyers had more choice.

File:Aquote1.png
Many trends of the year continued in the last quarter. Against the background of growing demand, manufacturers have problems, so this year we can count on an increase in the number of orders completed. After this year, the monitor market may move to a faster replacement cycle based on faster connection to laptops and more frequent use at home, "said Jay Chou, monitor market research manager at IDC.

Major monitor manufacturers in 2020 (IDC data)

The IDC report notes that the joint share of the five largest monitor manufacturers has decreased due to the fact that the IT budgets of companies were directed mainly to other products and services, and office occupancy in 2020 was low. Enterprise-focused orders from Dell and HP Inc. have slightly reduced monitor shipments in 2020, while companies that focus more on consumer hardware and are less dependent on developed markets have been able to significantly strengthen their position.

At the end of 2020, Dell led the global monitor market with more than 26.4 million devices. Almost the same result was in 2019 - the fall was 0.1%, but the vendor's market share decreased from 21% to 19.3%.

The second place was taken by the Taiwanese vendor TPV, which shipped 19.2 million monitors over the year, or 14.1% of the total market volume. Compared to 2019, shipments from the company increased by 9.3%, and the share increased by 0.1 percentage points.

Global Monitor Market Forecast 2021-2025 (IDC Data)

HP Inc. closed the top three with a result of 18.5 million monitors and a share of 13.5%. A year earlier, deliveries from HP reached 18.6 million devices, and its market share was at the level of 14.8%.

The title of the fourth largest manufacturer of PC monitors went to Lenovo. The company produced about 14.4 million devices, or 10.5% of the total result. Compared to 2019, shipments of Lenovo PC displays increased by 6.4%, but the market share decreased by 0.2 percentage points.

Samsung completes the list of leading computer display vendors. In 2020, the company delivered more than 11.7 million of these devices, increasing shipments by 13.2%. Taking this into account, Samsung's share contribution increased from 7.1% to 8.6%.

In 2020, the US overtook China to become the largest monitor market, which analysts say should not change in the coming years. Thanks to the contribution of North America and Europe, the global monitor market is expected to increase by 8.7% in 2021, and the growth rate will be measured at 0.4% in subsequent years.

The IDC study also said manufacturers will face component shortages in the first half of 2021. As we return to offices, we expect to increase sales of monitors to corporate customers.[4]

Gaming Monitor Market Growth by 105% to 18.4 Million Units - TrendForce

In 2020, deliveries of gaming monitors (which include models with a display refresh rate of over 100 Hz) increased by 105%, to 18.4 million units. In 2019, shipments of such monitors were below 10 million units. This is evidenced by TrendForce data.

According to analysts, such a significant growth in the gaming monitor market was facilitated by the efforts of manufacturers who invested significant resources in the development of this category, as well as the increased demand for gaming devices amid the forced stay of people at home due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

It is assumed that the gaming monitor market will maintain an upward trajectory in 2021. According to TrendForce's forecast, shipments of monitors with a refresh rate of more than 100 Hz will increase by another 41% and approach 26 million units.

Global Game Monitor Shipments 2018-2020 (TrendForce Data)

TrendForce analyst Anita Wang points out that Taiwan-based MSI has seen the fastest growth in gaming monitor sales. In 2020, it increased sales volumes by 114%, which is significantly higher than the average market growth. Although the company mainly deals with the supply of monitors with curved screens, in 2020 it decided to diversify supplies and expanded its branded offer with flat IPS displays.

Shipments of ASUS gaming monitors for 2020 showed an increase of 108%. 2020 was a period for the company when it put a record number of monitors on the market in its history. If we take the total deliveries of all categories of the company's monitors for 2020, then ASUS will be the leader in annual growth of these products among the leading brands.

Delivery of game AOC monitors/in Philips 2020 increased by 102%. Growth was driven by strong demand for both mainstream models with curved displays and traditional flat-screen IPS monitors. AOC/Philips is expected to add high-end Mini LED panel-based models to its range in 2021.

The leader in the monitor panel market in 2020, according to TrendForce, was Samsung Display Co (SDC) with a 35% share. But since it is reducing panel production, its share will gradually be selected by competitors, among the applicants - AUO.[5]

2019

Sales of 320 thousand portable monitors. Top 5 manufacturers

In 2019, the global market for portable monitors amounted to 320 thousand units, writes the DigiTimes portal, citing industry sources.

They do not name the dynamics and only talk about the growing demand for such equipment. Portable monitors are understood not only as small devices with 5-13 inch screens, but also quite large (14-18 inch) if their design is light and optimized for frequent transportation. In addition, such models are distinguished by low-voltage power supply (5 and/or 12 volts). Portable monitors take with them on trips, and are also installed in cars by the manufacturers of the latter themselves.

The volume of the global market for portable monitors amounted to 320 thousand units, writes the DigiTimes portal, citing industry sources

At the end of 2019, Asus was named the largest manufacturer of portable monitors, whose share was 65%. HP Inc. is next with a large lag. With a 16 percent result.

The leading five also included the brands Acer, AOC and Lenovo, which accounted for 3-4% of equipment supplies in the segment.

According to the portal's interlocutors, using its competitive solutions in the field of batteries and touch displays, Asus manages to offer inexpensive monitors (retail prices range from $149 to $349), thanks to which the Taiwanese company retains leadership and, most likely, will remain in first place and beyond.

The publication says that the strengthening of Asus's position in the market under consideration is facilitated by orders from the delivery of equipment to one of the German automakers, as well as the launch of new models of gaming devices. It is expected that in 2020 Asus will release a total of more than 300 thousand portable monitors.

Against the backdrop of growing demand for portable monitors, more and more manufacturers are trying to actively work in this market. Thus, Acer, AOC, Lenovo and Micro-Star International (MSI (Emesai Computer)) are trying to impose a struggle on the leaders. [6]

Market growth by 1.5% to 125.2 million units - IDC

The volume of the global computer monitor market in 2019 reached 125.2 million units, an increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year. This is reported by IDC analysts.

According to them, the growth in demand for monitors, as well as for computers, was facilitated by the transition of companies from the operating system Windows 7 to Windows 10. Another growth driver was the gaming equipment segment, due to which sales of consumer monitors increased, which has not happened since 2010.

PC Monitor Market Leaders, IDC Data

The study also notes that in 2019, for the first time in all time, monitors with 23.8-inch displays outperformed 21.5-inch models, which was facilitated by the efforts of panel and ready-made device manufacturers, which focused on larger products.

The leaders of the global monitor market are Dell, HP Inc. and TPV, which accounted for almost half of the equipment deliveries at the end of 2019.

According to analysts, a number of problems are expected in the PC monitor market, which will take some time to solve. In particular, since the transition of corporate clients to Windows 10 has largely ended, demand from this segment will slow down after two years of growth.

In addition, the deterioration of the situation is expected due to the consequences of the coronavirus COVID-19, such as a lack of components, a shortage of labor and disruptions in logistics. Events in China will continue to have a devastating impact on the entire monitor supply chain. This state of affairs is likely to continue throughout the first half of 2020. In addition, demand in China and other regions will be suppressed. The situation will improve slightly in the second half of the year, and recovery is not predicted until 2021.

Since the coronavirus severely limits sales of monitors and other electronics in retail stores, IDC analysts advise manufacturers to reconsider their strategy for the online sales channel.[7]

2018: Market growth 1.6% to 122.8 million - IDC

In 2018, the volume of the global computer monitor market amounted to 122.8 million units, an increase of 1.6% compared to deliveries a year ago of 120.8 million units. This is evidenced by IDC data released on March 29, 2019.

According to experts, monitor sales grew for four consecutive quarters, but in October-December 2018 they decreased by 2.1%. At the same time, in the nine countries leading in the sale of monitors, there was a cumulative growth of 4.7%. The Chinese market (the largest in the world) and the Indian market (the fifth largest) fell by a total of 10.3%.

At the end of 2019, shipments of monitors will be reduced by 2.7% (up to 118 million units), and in 2020 the production of equipment will decrease to 114 million units due to the further spread of cheap mobile devices, researchers predict.

Linn Huang, vice president of research at IDC Devices & Displays, says the Indian market will recover faster than expected, given that the main problem for it was the excessively large reserves of stale goods. In China, continuing weak macroeconomic trends will leave falling demand on the monitor market, the expert said.

Major Monitor Manufacturers, IDC Data

The list of the world's largest monitor manufacturers in 2018 did not undergo major changes compared to 2017. Dell not only remained in first place, but also strengthened its position. HP Inc rose to second position, which managed to get ahead of TPV.

The study also notes that monitors with 21.5- and 23.8-inch displays occupied 21.7% and 17.8% of the market, respectively. The fastest growing sales showed segments of devices with 23.8-inch and 27-inch displays. The share of monitors with built-in TV tuners for the year fell from 4.8% to 3%, almost the entire (99.3%) this segment is controlled by LG and Samsung.[8]

2014: Samsung beats HP in monitor market

On March 31, 2015, IDC analysts released the results of the 2014 computer monitor market research. The demand for these products on a global scale was lower than experts expected.[9]

In 2014, manufacturers around the world shipped 133.6 million monitors against 137.2 million a year earlier. In October-December 2014, about 34 million devices were produced, which is 4.4% less on an annualized basis. Experts predicted a drop in shipments by 3.1%.

The global PC monitor market sank in volume despite strong sales of consumer models at the end of 2014, as well as the favorable impact of the discontinued official support for Windows XP, which contributed to the massive update of computer equipment in the consumer and corporate segments, said IDC analyst Phuong Hang.

The research report also states that almost all monitors on the market are equipped with LED backlighting. It was present in 97.6% of devices supplied by vendors in the fourth quarter of 2014, which is 7.9 percentage points higher than a year ago.

The most popular segment in terms of size in 2013 and 2014 were devices with 21-inch screens. According to the results of the last three months of 2014, the share of such models in the total market volume increased to 22.5%. Experts also note the growing popularity of products with built-in television tuners: their penetration rose to 5.8% in 2014, and in 2015 this share is expected to increase to 6.5%. Almost all monitors with TV tuners (99% in 2014) are released on the market by Samsung and LG.

The largest manufacturer of computer monitors in the world is Dell, which in the fourth quarter of 2014 increased supplies of products in almost all regions except Japan and Latin America.

2015 (forecast)

In 2015, approximately 120 million monitors will be sold worldwide, and by 2019 sales will decrease to 104 million.

In the first quarter of this year, 29.5 million computer monitors were sold in the world, which is 12% less than in the first quarter of last year and 1.5% less than analysts predicted. Despite some positive changes - in Japan, for example, after four consecutive quarters of decline, sales rose by 2% - analysts believe that in the near future the trend of decline in sales will continue. Some revival in demand can be expected later, when new monitor models will enter the consumer market, as well as in small and medium-sized businesses. For the second quarter, IDC analysts predict a 3.4% decline in sales compared to last year to 28.8 million monitors. For the year as a whole, approximately 120 million monitors will be sold in the world, and by 2019 sales will decrease to 104 million per year.

The most popular technology for monitors remains LED backlight, and the format is a wide 21.5-inch screen.

The largest monitor manufacturer is still Dell with a market share of 15.8%. It remained in second place (Samsung 12.7%), although monitor sales fell 13.3% compared to last year. This is followed by (HP 11.5%), LG Electronics (9.7%) and (9.1 Lenovo %).
