Population

2022:39 million people

During 2022, Canada's population increased by more than 1 million people, or 2.7%. This was a record large increase since 1957, as stated in the report of the Statistical Service of the country, published on March 22, 2023.

It is reported that as of January 1, 2023, 39,566,248 people lived in Canada, which is 1,050,110 more compared to the first numbers of 2022. This increase is partly due to efforts by the local government to bring migrants into the country to reduce labour shortages. In particular, international migration accounted for 95.9% of the total population increase.

Toronto, Canada

Canada accepts people changing their place of residence due to the current geopolitical situation, various conflicts or natural disasters, such as the earthquakes of 2023 in Turkey and Syria. At the same time, Statistics Canada notes that the increase in the number of permanent and temporary immigrants may result in additional problems in some regions of the country related to housing shortages, the provision of services to the population, an increase in the burden on transport infrastructure, etc.

Data for September 2022,

Canada welcomed 437,180 immigrants in 2022, and the number of non-permanent residents increased by 607,782. These are record figures for the entire history of statistics collection. They, as they say, reflect "higher immigration targets and a record year for processing immigration applications."

The shown result puts Canada in first place in terms of population growth among 38 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). With growth at 2.7%, as Statistics Canada emphasizes, the country's population could double in 26 years.[1]

History

2024: Finance and housing ministers resign as Liberal support for Trudeau government weakens

The Liberal government of Canada in December 2024 experienced a shake-up. Two ministers left their posts at once: Chrystia Freeland - Minister of Finance, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada (and an ardent supporter of support for Ukraine), and Sean Fraser - Minister of Housing.

Chrystia Freeland - Finance Minister, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and ardent supporter of support for Ukraine was forced to leave the government

It was the economic situation and the housing crisis that became the main subjects of criticism of Justin Trudeau's government. In recent months, Trudeau has faced calls to resign, including from members of his own liberal party. However, the Prime Minister decided instead to give the people the "heads" of ministers responsible for reducing the standard of living of ordinary Canadians.

The liberal party is more than 20% behind the opposition conservative party in the polls, with less than a year to go until the election.

The conservative opposition has already tried three times to pass a vote of no confidence in Trudeau. And the only thing keeping him and the liberal minority afloat is the fragile support of other left-leaning parties.
