History

2021: Hubert Burda Media sold Burda's stake to commercial director Jürgen Ulrich

At the end of November 2021, it became known about the change of owners of the Burda publishing house. The German company Hubert Burda Media sold its stake to commercial director Jürgen Ulrich, who has been working with Burda since 1997.

Information about the deal was provided to Kommersant by sources in the publishing market and confirmed in Burda International (the parent structure of Hubert Burda Media).

Burda Publishing House changed owners

The strategic focus of Burda International is increasingly shifting towards Central and Western Europe, so Russia is no longer the main market for us. The sale of Russian companies is a logical step in the implementation of this new strategy, "Martin Weiss, a member of the board of directors of Hubert Burda Media, told the publication.

According to him, Jürgen Ulrich will head the Russian business of Burda and "will continue to maintain close contacts with us."

Ulrich will become the main owner of ID, but due to restrictions on the share of media ownership in Russia, foreigners will attract partners to buy out a significant share, the sources of the publication specified. Restrictions for foreigners in the media were adopted in 2014: foreigners were forbidden to own more than 20% of the founding company of the media. Moreover, according to paragraph 19.1 of the law on media, "any form of control over the founder of the media and over the editorial office" is prohibited. In case of violation of the media threatens to revoke the license.

A newspaper source suggested that Roman Doroshenko, who a few years earlier bought the Sales company from HBM (engaged in distribution of Burda products), could become a partner. According to the publication, HBM took such a step not to close the Russian division of the publishing house.

According to Kommersant's interlocutors, other partners may be involved. Most likely, the rights to issue Burda publications will pass to the new owners.[1]
