Cumulus Networks brings the ideas of Linux in telecommunication. Based by experienced engineers from Cisco and VMware, Cumulus Networks developed Linux the operating system (OS) for network equipment and fills an important space in disclosure of capacity of software-defined data centers. The concluded bargain has a direct bearing on merger of the Israeli producer network to Mellanox Technologies equipment Nvidia company for $6.9 billion. Some products Mellanox use software of Cumulus: for example, the Mellanox Spectrum Ethernet switches work running Cumulus Linux OS, and switches without OS (bare-metal switches) are delivered with other Cumulus tools helping clients to configure their network infrastructures. The companies cooperate since 2016.
Thanks to Cumulus acquisition the Nvidia company will receive full control over key program components of Mellanox devices and will exclude a possibility of purchase of a startup by the competitor. Cumulus OS also supports switches from Broadcom.
Besides, Nvidia will be able to approve plans for product development of Cumulus with own tasks, writes the SiliconANGLE edition.
Nvidia, most likely, already has plans for optimization of operating systems of Cumulus for the Mellanox switches. After closing of the transaction Cumulus developers will be able to work with the Mellanox commands which are engaged in creation of the equipment directly.[1]
