Cumulus Networks brings the ideas of Linux in telecommunication. Based by experienced engineers from Cisco and VMware, Cumulus Networks developed Linux the operating system (OS) for network equipment and fills an important space in disclosure of capacity of software-defined data centers. Cumulus Networks is among the companies supporting work of community Open Compute Project.

The Cumulus Networks company created essentially new approach for corporate clients which allows to select the most optimal solutions for creation of network and not to depend on restrictions of specific vendor of the equipment. It allows to create more economic, convenient in operation and scalable network platforms which can be applied when developing solutions for DPC of new generation.

History

2020: Nvidia purchased Cumulus Networks

At the beginning of May, 2020 Nvidia announced Cumulus Networks acquisition. For how many OS producer for switches of data centers was sold, it is not reported.

According to the vice president for development of the switching Ethernet-equipment in Nvidia Amir Katz, the company thanks to purchase of Cumulus will be able to be engaged in innovations and optimization within all the portfolio of network solutions — from chips and systems to the software, including the analytical tools similar to Cumulus NetQ [this solution simplifies support of network – a comment of TAdviser].

An opportunity to implement innovations in all technology stack will help us to provide the large-scale performance necessary for the accelerated software-defined data centers — he said.

The concluded bargain has a direct bearing on merger of the Israeli producer network to Mellanox Technologies equipment Nvidia company for $6.9 billion. Some products Mellanox use software of Cumulus: for example, the Mellanox Spectrum Ethernet switches work running Cumulus Linux OS, and switches without OS (bare-metal switches) are delivered with other Cumulus tools helping clients to configure their network infrastructures. The companies cooperate since 2016.

Thanks to Cumulus acquisition the Nvidia company will receive full control over key program components of Mellanox devices and will exclude a possibility of purchase of a startup by the competitor. Cumulus OS also supports switches from Broadcom.

Besides, Nvidia will be able to approve plans for product development of Cumulus with own tasks, writes the SiliconANGLE edition.

Nvidia, most likely, already has plans for optimization of operating systems of Cumulus for the Mellanox switches. After closing of the transaction Cumulus developers will be able to work with the Mellanox commands which are engaged in creation of the equipment directly.[1]
