D-Link in the world

2019: D-Link lied about the security of its devices and ignored vulnerabilities

In early July 2019, D-Link agreed to settle a lawsuit in which the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the company of misrepresenting the security of its devices and ignoring reports of vulnerabilities.

According to the newspaper, the ZDNet Taiwanese manufacturer of network equipment promised the authorities to introduce a new practice of ensuring security ON in their routers and "smart" cameras for the house.

D-Link will prove the safety of its products for 10 years

In addition, an independent auditor will review the safety of D-Link products for 10 years. The FTC will choose this auditor, and D-Link will independently decide what certificates it should possess before this company begins to study the security of vendor solutions.

Here are some requirements that D-Link has agreed to meet:

  • written provision of information on how certain functions may affect the safety of equipment;
  • modeling threats to identify external and internal security risks of data transmitted by devices;
  • Use automated tools to validate source code and test products for vulnerabilities before entering the market
  • Regular code checks
  • introducing a mechanism for eliminating vulnerabilities discovered at the software development stage;
  • continuous control of possible vulnerabilities in products;
  • automatic update of firmware in devices.

The FTC accused D-Link of not fixing vulnerabilities in its devices, creating a risk of leakage of customers' personal data. According to authorities, due to flaws in D-Link equipment, hackers could spy on users by listening to their conversations and watching them through cameras in real time. According to the FTC, D-Link failed to provide even basic software security.[1]

2017: US Federal Trade Commission accuses D-Link of negligence over the safety of its products

In early 2017, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC USA) sued D-Link, accusing the company of negligence in the safety of its products, Bloomberg news agency reported.

D-Link has failed to provide the proper level of protection for its routers and webcams, leaving them vulnerable to cyber attacks, according to the FTC. Insufficiently secure devices allow hackers to control the location of consumers in order to steal their data or commit other crimes, the regulator said in a complaint sent to federal court in San Francisco.

The commission also accused D-Link of failing to use industry-leading methods to protect consumer software and content, and failing to secure private registration data on various platforms. The FTC believes that the manufacturer is deceiving customers by talking about the introduction of advanced security technologies in its products.

In many cases, hackers, using widely available tools, can remotely detect and hack devices exposed to known vulnerabilities. An attacker can disrupt a consumer router by gaining unauthorized access to confidential personal information, the FTC said.

D-Link spokeswoman Ashley Nakano told Bloomberg that the company denies the allegations and intends to defend itself in court.[2]

According to Allison Nixon, director of security research at Flashpoint, the FTC's actions could force device manufacturers internet of things to improve the security of their products.

I think vendors should take this seriously. The IoT world needs to change faster, because this is a big problem, "Nixon said.
