Plan for opening a laboratory for creating shape memory alloys for medical and technical applications
In NUST MISIS, a research space will appear in the structure of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering - "Alloys with shape memory." Scientists will explore new promising compositions of alloys with shape memory, study the modes of thermomechanical processing of alloys for medical and technical purposes, as well as develop scientific and technological foundations for the creation of personalized implants. The university announced this on November 23, 2023.
The direction "Alloys with shape memory" has been developing at MISIS University since 1977. During this time, university scientists have created a number of breakthrough developments that have found application in various sectors of the economy. NUST MISIS maintains the continuity of generations in scientific teams: the joint research work of leading and young scientists ensures the continuous development of scientific knowledge. Thus, the laboratory "Alloys with shape memory" will be headed by a young researcher, Ph.D. Vadim Sheremetyev. The supervisor of the laboratory will be Sergey Dmitrievich Prokoshkin - Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, materials scientist, representative of a scientific dynasty inextricably linked with MISIS University for the protyazhenii hundred years, - said the rector of MISIS University Alevtina Chernikova. |
In addition to studying practical applications, the employees of the division will investigate the fundamental aspects of shear transformations and the features of crystal phase lattices in titanium-based shape memory alloys.
As of November 2023, the team has 20 people. 14 students are already preparing their thesis on the scientific topics of the laboratory. Research is aimed at the development of scientific and technological foundations for managing the functional characteristics of alloys with shape memory by methods of thermomechanical processing and additive technologies, determining patterns in the "processing-structure-properties" bundle, "said Vadim Sheremetyev, Ph.D., associate professor of the Department of Metal Pressure Processing. |
The laboratory staff has strong ties with the industry and scientific organizations formed during the implementation of previous projects within the framework of the RNF, the federal target program and state assignment: LLC Industrial Center MATEK-SPF, LLC CONMET, LLC Scientific and Technical Center 'Technologies of Special Metallurgy'.
It is planned to strengthen cooperation both with foreign centers and Russian research groups working in the field of alloys with shape memory: TsNIICHermet named after I.P. Bardin, Institute of Machine Science named after A.A. Blagonravov RAS, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, NRNU MEPhI, UGATU.
The research topics are aimed at solving the problems of the strategic project NUST MISIS "Biomedical Materials and Bioengineering" under the program of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia "Priority 2030."
Opening of the University of Science and Technology
The University of Science and Technology MISIS on October 3, 2023 announced the opening of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the key task of which will be the creation of a national branch of biomedical materials and bioengineering, the introduction of import-saving technologies, the training of specialists who are not yet in the labor market. The first recruitment for the master's program will take place in 2024. The creation of the institute is correlated with the development strategy of NUST MISIS within the framework of the Priority 2030 program.
MISIS University is one of the leading universities in Russia in the field of biomedical engineering: by the end of 2022, 11% of total R&D revenues are in research and development in the field of bioengineering. The biomedical theme is being developed by 14 research laboratories and departments, 13 biomedical courses are being implemented, 3 master's programs and the DPO program are being implemented.
The creation of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering will consolidate the leadership of NUST MISIS in the field of biomedical materials and biotechnology, strengthen collaborations with medical institutions and research structures, and attract funding for innovative developments. Fyodor Senatov, Ph.D., Director of the Biomedical Engineering REC, was appointed Director of the Institute.
As part of the strategic project "Biomedical Materials and Bioengineering," implemented at MISIS University under the Priority 2030 program, university scientists have been developing new technologies and materials in the field of biomedicine for several years. The established Institute of Biomedical Engineering will unite the efforts of leading universities, research centers, innovative enterprises of the country. Our graduate of Ph.D. Fedor Senatov will head the institute. On his account, a number of breakthrough developments and know-how, dozens of scientific articles, he is the head of the first master's and graduate program "Biomaterial Science" in Russia, within the framework of which students already participate in master's studies, carry out projects under grants from the Russian National Research Fund, and register patents. Academician, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the strategic project "Biomedical Materials and Bioengineering" of MISIS University, Doctor of Medical Sciences Vladimir Chekhonin will become a scientific consultant to the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. said Alevtina Chernikova, rector of NITU MISIS.

Institute of Biomedical Engineering NUST MISIS will become a multifunctional center for the development and commercialization of new products for biomedicine.
The consortium created in 2022 as part of the Priority 2030 program is responsible for the formation of the product line. The association includes leading universities, research centers, innovative enterprises and startups. Focusing on the product model will allow researchers to focus on developing only those solutions that will be in demand in the market.
The task of the formed expert council, which will include practitioners in the field of oncology, neurophysiology, pharmacology, genetics, toxicology, etc., is an independent assessment of the development of the institute's scientists. This will help solve the problem of closing the gap between the possibilities of domestic medical supplies and the increasing needs of people to improve the quality of life.
The recommendations of the consortium specialists and the expert council will be taken into account when creating educational programs. The first recruitment for the master's program "Neurotechnologies" will take place in 2024, in bachelor's degree - in 2025. Since 2023, the DPO program "Biofabrication and Methods of Analysis of Tissue Engineering" has been implemented.
The institute will include laboratories and centers that are already conducting successful research in the field of biomedicine: Research Institute of Biophysics, Research Center of Biomedical Engineering, Research Center "Inorganic Nanomaterials," Laboratory "Biomedical Nanomaterials"[1].
