Death of 14 COVID-19 patients after breakdown of oxygen equipment
In mid-December 2020, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case (under part 3 of article 9 of the Criminal Code - causing death by negligence to two or more persons) in connection with the death of 14 patients infected with COVID-19 after the breakdown of oxygen equipment.
According to the prosecutor's office, in early November 2020, a malfunction was found in the hospital's intensive care unit in a gasifier that automatically supplies oxygen. After that, 40 people who were in intensive care were transferred to other medical institutions in Kursk.
The city administration said that none of the patients died during transportation, reports TASS. The prosecutor's office noted that 14 people died within a few days. They were in serious condition.
Rostekhnadzor, when checking in the hospital, revealed violations in the maintenance of the gas heater, which failed. The agency opened an administrative violation case against hospital officials.
The health committee said that an internal check was carried out immediately after the incident, after detecting a malfunction of the valve system, the supply of oxygen to patients in the institution did not stop, and the ventilators continued to work. The transfer of patients to other institutions did not affect the course of their disease, they stressed there.
On December 17, 2020, the administration of the Kursk region also announced that the patients of the Kursk COVID hospital were not left without oxygen, and the ventilators continued to work.
The gasifier was repaired within three days and the city clinical maternity hospital resumed work with coronavirus patients in full. The inspection of the investigating authorities on this case has not yet been completed, final conclusions cannot yet be drawn, - the regional administration reports. |
They added that, according to the inspection, gasifiers are operating normally, and by the end of 2020 it is planned to supply three more units of such equipment to hospitals in the region.[1]
