History

2020: Pure Storage purchased Portworx for $370 million

In September, 2020 Pure Storage providing services in the storage as-a-service model ("storage as service"), announced on September 16, 2020 TAdviser signing of the final agreement about acquisition of Portworx company, developer of the platform of the same name of services of data for Kubernetes. Transaction amount is about $370 million and will be paid by cash. According to the statement of Pure Storage, the transaction became for it the largest acquisition and marks deep expansion of the company on the market of multicloud services of data for support of Kubernetes and containers. Satisfy all terms of the contract, including get approvals of regulators, the companies plan until the end of September, 2020.

The transaction will allow to connect the existing obsolete equipment and the application environment to the new environment of containers — the CEO of Pure Storage Charles Giancarlo told the SiliconANGLE edition. — We saw in Portworx the philosophy very similar to that which we advance in Pure: creation of a cloud everywhere and providing its identical type, whether it be private data processing center or public cloud. Having integrated these two things, we will create the most correct environment for clients.

Thanks to this transaction the buyer expects to strengthen positions in the growing market of the cloud services of data storage based on use of the containers Kubernetes.

After closing of the transaction of Pure Storage will create new cloud division based on Portworx headed by the CEO of this Murli Tirumale company (Murli Thirumale). It will allow Pure Storage to offer a full range of Kubernetes-services of data processing which can be unrolled in a cloud or locally, the vice president for the strategy of Pure Matt Kiksmoller said.

As the far-sighted enterprises apply cloud strategy for development of the business, we are very glad that the Portworx command joined us and brought the technologies to expand our success in providing multicloud services of data for Kubernetes. This acquisition marks an important milestone in expansion of our experience with data with the purpose to cover both traditional, and native cloud applicaions.
told Charles Giancarlo, the Chairman and the chief executive officer of Pure Storage.

Portworx Enterprise represents the cloud platform for storage and data management in the containers Kubernetes used by the companies for ensuring permanent storage, high availability, protection and data security and cloud mobility for the containers unrolled in hybrid cloud computing architectures. Having integrated services of container data of Portworx with platforms of data of Pure and the software of Pure Service Orchestrator, Pure expects to provide a full range of services of data which can be unrolled in a cloud, on "naked iron" or on corporate arrays and which at the same time are deployed in Kubernetes cluster. Thus, thanks to Portworx Pure will be able to provide the comprehensive platform for each stage of transition to cloud computing.

According to 451 Research, for September, 2020 95% of applications are developed in containers. According to forecasts of Gartner, by 2025 85% of the global companies will use containers in the production environment in comparison with 35% in 2019. Nevertheless, in process of scaling of cloud environments traditional and cloud storage answers requests of the microservice applications unrolled in containers less. It, in turn, complicates ensuring fault tolerance, mobility, security, backup and data recovery, especially at deployment in multicloud environments.

The service platform of storage capable to cope with similar difficulties is necessary for native cloud applicaions. Portworx and Pure jointly will provide such platform.[1]

I am proud of what we created in Portworx: the platform of services of data for the clients starting crucial applications in hybrid and multicloud environments. Dynamics and growth which we observe in our daily activity show that containers and Kubernetes have fundamental value for architecture of applications of the next generation and, therefore, competitiveness,
said Murli Tirumale, the CEO of Portworx.
