Two top executives of smartphone maker Vivo have been arrested. They are accused of money laundering
On December 23, 2023, the Indian Financial Crime Agency arrested two senior employees of the local unit of the Chinese manufacturer smartphones Vivo. The detainees are suspected of committing fraud related to. money laundering
The identities of those arrested as of the end of December 2023 were not disclosed in the interests of the investigation. In addition, it is not clear which states the suspects are citizens of. Vivo is preparing for a trial, saying it is "deeply alarmed by the actions of the Indian authorities." The arrested persons were taken to a Delhi court and sent to custody.
The arrests come about two months after similar charges were brought against four other Vivo executives, including a Chinese citizen, by Indian law enforcement, Reuters reported. This trial could aggravate relations between New Delhi and Beijing, which worsened due to the 2020 Indo-Chinese border conflict - an armed clash over the disputed Aksaichin region (located on the border of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the PRC, Pakistan and India). After that, India tightened control over Chinese business and investment in the country.
In connection with the arrest of Vivo top managers, Beijing urges the Indian authorities not to discriminate against Chinese companies. It is noted that China will provide legal protection and necessary assistance to the detained Vivo employees.
These arrests demonstrate the ongoing harassment [by Indian authorities] and essentially create an atmosphere of uncertainty for the IT industry as a whole. We are determined to use every legal opportunity to refute allegations against detained employees, Vivo said in a statement.[1] |
