2025: Launch in Moscow and St. Petersburg

T2 implemented Voice over Wi-Fi technology in Moscow and St. Petersburg. This service allows you to make calls over the Wi-Fi network where mobile communication may not be available: in buildings with thick walls, basements, high-rises or during a trip abroad. The service is also open to residents of the Stavropol Territory and the Tambov Region. The company plans to introduce VoWiFi technology in all regions of its presence within a few months. The T2 announced this on April 7, 2025.

In December 2024, T2 completed the implementation of VoLTE in the regions of its presence and set about introducing another technology for an alternative way of making calls - Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi). The Tambov region has become a test region for launch. A successful pilot helped introduce VoWiFi in the Stavropol Territory, on the day of launch. At the end of March 2025, the option became also available to residents of Moscow and the Moscow region, in early April - in St. Petersburg.

In total, VoWiFi T2 technology has potentially opened up to more than 33 million people. Since the beginning of March, more than 6 million calls have passed over the Wi-Fi network in connected regions, of which 3.5 million have been in Moscow over the past two weeks. To successfully implement the service, the technical department has improved voice and packet switching systems in technical macro-regions. Due to this, the T2 reduced the time to establish a connection between subscribers, provided improved sound quality, stable communication and information transmission without interference, echo and noise.

VoWiFi allows you to use a standard Wi-Fi network for calls if there is no mobile network coverage. The technology is especially relevant for those who can be in basements, on the upper floors of high-rises or abroad, that is, in places where a router is used instead of a signal from operator networks to access the network.

To use Voice over Wi-Fi, the subscriber should make sure that his mobile device supports VoLTE and VoWiFi, and the technologies themselves are activated in the internal settings of the gadget. VoWiFi calls are charged as regular voice traffic, there is no additional fee for using the service.
