Sukhoi Superjet New is a Russian short-haul narrow-body aircraft, a version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 with maximum import substitution of foreign components by Russian, abbreviated SSJ-NEW.
2024: When developing engines for SuperJet, some of the real tests are replaced by mathematical modeling
On May 24, 2024, the Salyut production complex of the United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of the Rostec state corporation) announced the introduction of a specialized program that allows reducing the volume of field tests. This system makes it possible to replace some of the real tests in the development of engines for SuperJet aircraft with mathematical modeling.
The program simulates self-oscillations (flutter) of compressor blades of gas turbine engines. The software is based on a methodology developed by employees of the development bureau of PC Salyut together with Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. The introduction of mathematical modeling, as noted, provides a number of advantages over traditional tests. In particular, the amount of financial costs during the design stage of the unit is significantly reduced. Besides, reliability of power plant is increased.
With the help of our methodology, for the first time in the domestic engine industry, the low-pressure compressor first-stage impeller was isolated from self-oscillations only using numerical modeling. Usually, this required two or three cycles of field tests, "says Stanislav Chepiga, head of the design bureau of the Salyut PC UEC. |
It is said that UEC enterprises are actively introducing digital technologies in various fields. In particular, the transition to digital certification is underway. Digital twins and computer simulations help reduce traditional testing and speed up certification of aircraft engines, including PD-8 for the SuperJet 100 passenger liner. Moreover, computer modeling provides additional flexibility in performing tests. You can conduct virtual tests of both individual components of the power plant and the system as a whole: for example, you can check the performance of the engine when a bird hits.[1]

Preparation of SSJ-NEW for flight tests
At the Production Center of the Regional Aircraft branch, a visiting session of the Scientific and Technical Council (NTS) on the preparation of the first SSJ-NEW experimental aircraft for flight tests has ended. Rostec announced this on June 6, 2023.
The session was attended by representatives of suppliers of aircraft systems and components. NTS members highly appreciated the degree of readiness of the aircraft and the volume of system developments, paying special attention to the safety issues of the upcoming flights.
We went to the finish line of preparing SSJ-NEW for the first test flight. The specialists of our enterprises have done a lot of work on the import substitution of all foreign airliner systems for Russian ones. The car received a domestic control system, avionics, chassis, hydraulic system, air conditioning system and much more. The first flight will take place in the near future, after inspections of equipment on the ground. Their goal is to ensure the safety of passengers, because in the future SSJ-NEW, together with the medium-haul MS-21, will become the basis of the fleet of Russian airlines. We understand how important this aircraft is for our country, and therefore we are doing everything possible to launch it into mass production as soon as possible, "said Vladimir Artyakov, First Deputy General Director of Rostec State Corporation. |
Based on the results of the NTS, the final list of ground checks that the aircraft must pass before the start of flight tests has been formed. To speed up the test program, SSJ-NEW will perform its first flight on Franco-Russian SaM146 engines. The second prototype will begin a flight test program with domestic PD-8 engines, the arrival of which in Komsomolsk-on-Amur is expected in the coming weeks.
Within a few weeks, we will begin factory refinement tests, within which the first flight will take place. At the next stage, the aircraft will be presented to the specialists of the Federal Air Transport Agency for certification tests, as a result of which import-substituted systems will be approved for use on board SSJ-NEW. This will allow the start of mass production and commercial operation of the aircraft. At each stage of testing, our unconditional priority will be to ensure the safety and reliability of equipment, because soon this car will have to take passengers on board, "said Andrey Boginsky, Deputy General Director of the UAC for Civil Aviation - General Director of Irkut Corporation. |
The SSJ-NEW aircraft is created according to the import substitution program for systems and components and will become another model in the family of SuperJet aircraft operating in June 2023.

Aircraft Engine Plan PD-8
The United Engine Corporation Rostec has created an automatic control system (ACS) for the PD-8 aircraft engine, which is planned to equip the SSJ-NEW passenger airliner. Equipment monitoring the operation of the power plant, including traction parameters and fuel consumption, is assembled on the basis of 100% of Russian components and materials. This became known on January 27, 2022. Read more here.
