At the beginning of July, 2019 residential areas began to use drones for patrol of perimeter. The service provision contract on security in a number of residential complexes of the Republic of South Africa by the local government was signed with Drone Guards company.

The director of the company Kim James explained that all drones are piloted by the person whom the second operator can secure. Drones are programmed so that to patrol perimeter of the residential complex on GPS coordinates, and the operator can deviate from the course at detection of the violator.

In addition to high-quality cameras, drones are equipped with thermal imagers for flights with forward translation of video on the land control panel at night. Unlike a traditional static video surveillance system, UAVs are capable to patrol actively set perimeter. Besides, malefactors can not suspect about similar use of drones that provides additional benefit.

However at use of unmanned aerial vehicles in residential areas there can be problems with maintaining confidentiality. Though the drones used for protection can fly over residential areas and roads, there is a number of strict rules to which the group of observation should follow. In particular, the drone cannot rise higher than 120 meters, and the security service should request permission of the house owner before flight of the drone over an object. The Drone Guards company took a number of preventive measures, including having changed an inclination of cameras so that they could not look in gardens of inhabitants. Besides, the company held several Open Days to show technology to residents of the patrolled areas.

James could not provide information on what estates use security drones, but confirmed that the service works in a number of areas.[1]
