Lotus F1 prepares the four-year project with participation of technology developments of EMC

Customers: Lotus F1

Enstoun; Show business, leisure, sport

Contractors: Dell EMC
Product: Projects of creation of complex IT infrastructure

Project date: 2013/05  - 2017/04

The Lotus F1 command selected EMC as the partner for design of basic IT infrastructure, the press service of corporation reported on June 4, 2013.

Background

The new rules "Formulas 1" force designers of race cars to refuse atmospheric V8 engines and to pass to more powerful hybrid V6 engines with a turbo-supercharging and also they should implement new ERS technology (Energy Recovery System). Defined Lotus F1 - so tough framework of requirements will not allow to avoid complete upgrade of IT infrastructure — both on race circuits, and in the headquarters in Enstouna (Great Britain).

Objectives

Engineers of Lotus will create F1 race car in 2014 using cloud computing of EMC, they will increase efficiency of a system, will protect information, optimize process of management of data and their storage, promote cost reduction on the maintenance of IT infrastructure.

Within the project it is necessary to unroll in the Enstounsky data processing center the VCE Vblock system which will integrate advanced technologies for calculations, networks and data storage (including from EMC and VMware) for support of CAD programs and the ERP system of Microsoft Dynamics.

The EMC Atmos platform will provide storage, archiving and availability of large volumes of information of unstructured contents. Storage systems with support of deduplication of EMC Data Domain are intended for fast backup and recovery of arrays of information. The Cloud Tiering Appliance system will provide safe multilevel storage of CAD files before their moving to "cloud". All this will allow to reduce the volume of the main storage, to reduce operating expenses and to lower requirements to backup, claim in the company.

Corporate solution of EMC for synchronization and the general online access to files of Syncplicity and a management system for the rights to information (IRM) of Documentum will be traced and protected by documents, messages and investments during transmission, at storage and after delivery. It is supposed that such approach will simplify and will secure access to CAD files, joint work between Lotus F1 and her partners.

The second VCE Vblock system as a part of which the solution EMC VNX, it will be unrolled on the race circuit and will provide support of infrastructure of virtual work places of a command and online applications for work on the route.

The contract between partners is signed for four years.

"Technology — a crucial factor in designing of a victorious race car for Formula 1. We transform a delivery mode of IT services in our headquarters in Enstouna and on race circuits worldwide. Providing us the converged infrastructure and solutions with support of cloud computing, EMC will help us to accelerate transition to "cloud" and our speed on the route" — Patrick Louis, the chief executive of the Lotus F1 command noted.
"In a season of 2014 will become effective a set of changes in rules, and we will become witnesses of this revolution in design and creation of race cars for Formula 1. Increase in aerodynamic efficiency and decrease in fuel consumption by 35% put in the new specification set the serious problems for the technical director — Jeremy Burton, the executive vice president for business operations and marketing of EMC emphasized. — As a part of technical partners EMS will help the Lotus F1 team to take a step forward to the solution of this task. Together with the EMC command will be engaged in system implementation of safe and effective management of design data and also deployment of online applications for work on the route".
