Roskosmos and Roshydromet create a monitoring system of space weather

On May 12, 2020 Roskosmos announced creation of a monitoring system of space weather. For this purpose the state corporation signed the agreement with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Federal Hydrometeorology Service for Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet).

It is noted that cooperation began based on a successful completion of a stage of flight tests of small spacecrafts of format 3U of CubeSat "Socrates" and "VDNH-80. The devices developed by the thematic center MSU there is a scientific research institute of nuclear physics of D.V. Skobeltsyn, weight is 5 kg. They are equipped with the miniaturized devices for monitoring of radiation (DECOR device) and ultra-violet tranziyent (AURA device). Data retrieveds experimentally confirmed that satellites of the CubeSat format can be used for the benefit of meteorological services.

According to the head of Roshydromet Igor Shumakov, increase in the Russian orbital grouping at the expense of small spacecrafts is an important step in development of a system of operational monitoring of space weather.

The solution of this task will allow Roshydromet not only to provide with optional data of the interested consumers, but also to continue formation of a system of global monitoring of near-earth space for the purpose of identification of the dangerous heliogeophysical phenomena and warning of possible effects of their influence — he noted, having added that this solution is demanded the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications, the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Transport, Emercom of Russia and other ministries and departments.

Along with creation of a monitoring system of the main threat of space flights — radiation existing in space, the new project is directed to solution of the problem of studying of the nature of radiation fields in space, reported in Roskosmos.[1]
