2017: FineReader's biggest update in 10 years

In January 2017, Abbyy introduced a new version of its FineReader product. According to Ivan Bodyagin, Vice President and Director of the Abbyy Word Recognition Solutions Department, there have not been such a scale of changes in this product for ten years.

The new product - FineReader 14 - combines the functions of several previously created Abbyy tools for working with documents. The first version of FineReader was released in 1993 and had simple functionality for text recognition. In 2004, the simple PDF converter Abbyy PDF Transformer was released, which with the 2013 update (Abbyy PDF Transformer +) became a full-fledged PDF editor. In 2014, FineReader 12 was released, and in 2015, the Abbyy Comparator tool for comparing documents.

FineReader 14 combines the capabilities of all these products. It contains four main components: a PDF editor for working with PDF documents on a daily basis, a tool for comparing documents in various formats, including paper and electronic, an OCR editor - professional capabilities for text recognition, and a Hot Folder application for automating document conversion tasks. Hot Folder was previously present in the corporate version of FineReader.

Among the new features that were not previously in the above products are improved work with tables, with graphs, improved capabilities for recognizing some languages, adding new attachments, as well as viewing, renaming or deleting them, advanced options for group operations when creating new PDF documents, password protection of any document from opening, editing and/or printing, and much more.

Ivan Bodyagin explained the decision to combine the functionality of several products at once by the fact that company employees regularly encounter several typical scenarios for working with paper and PDF documents, which require different Abbyy products. It is much easier to execute these scenarios using one universal product, the company explains. The product is designed for almost any office employee.

File:Aquote1.png
Initially, products were released separately, because different target audiences were bored with different scenarios. And now the markets for solutions for text recognition and working with PDF are actually merging into a single one. In order for employees to freely solve many tasks when working with documents of different types, previously companies purchased and installed a whole set of programs. Now there is a universal ABBYY FineReader 14, - said Ivan Bodyagin.
File:Aquote2.png

This is also convenient for system administrators, added an Abbyy spokesman. Now you can serve not several, but one product, adjusting it to the needs of users.

The new version of FineReader is available in several editions, with more or less features and prices.

FineReader 14 Revisions and Delivery Forms

Products that have merged into one new solution will continue to be available in the Abbyy line for now, with the exception of FineReader 12. The latter with the release of FineReader 14 was withdrawn from the line. The rest of the products remained, because there may be a demand for them from users who need narrow functionality, Ivan Bodyagin explained to TAdviser. However, they will develop less actively, and will gradually leave the product line, he added.

Abbyy document products also have mobile counterparts. For example, there is. document scanner for iOS and Android with recognition function. However, some processes are still more convenient to run on a PC, and so far the main focus in product development remains on the PC version, Bodyagin said.

2014

ABBYY FineReader 12

On February 12, 2014, ABBYY announced the release of a new version of ABBYY FineReader. The new version helps to quickly translate paper documents, their images and PDF files into electronic editable formats. Accelerated algorithms for processing multi-page texts are implemented. The product contains new possibilities for improving the quality of both original images of documents and their recognized copies.

According to the new version, it more accurately recreates and preserves the structure and formatting of complex documents. Table recognition is improved by 40%, charts and graphs by 33%, which is possible thanks to changes in ADRT (Adaptive Document Recognition Technology) technology. For the convenience of the user, a choice of recognition modes is implemented: speed priority or quality priority. In the first case, the processing of documents is twice as fast.

New features of ABBYY FineReader 12

  • Easy work with multi-page documents and text fragments

With ABBYY FineReader 12, it has become easier to copy the contents of a document: if the user only needs a small part of a multi-page document, it is not necessary to recognize it as a whole. You can immediately navigate to the desired page, select the desired area, and click Copy. The program automatically recognizes the content and saves it to the clipboard.

  • The ability to copy individual fragments is also available during recognition of the entire document, which now occurs in the background. The user can not only view or copy the desired excerpt of text, but change the order of the pages or go to the program menu without waiting for FineReader to process the entire document.

  • New tools to improve image quality

The updated image editor allows you to significantly improve the quality of the document photo, and therefore the result of recognition. The new version of the program is able to crop all pages of the document by borders, eliminate the yellow or gray background characteristic of photos taken by a smartphone, and remove traces of seals and marks on black and white images.

  • You can change the resolution of photos, eliminate line distortions, change the orientation of pages and much more, all these settings can be made automatic.

  • Saving to PDF uses a new symbol anti-aliasing technology that improves the visual quality of the document.

  • Easier validation and editing of recognition results

The Validation window in the new ABBYY FineReader contains more convenient editing tools. It became possible to change the formatting of the selected word or phrase right when checking - specify the type of font, its size and style, insert special characters from the Unicode table. As before, you can select auto-correct options from the built-in dictionaries or make your own edits to the text.

  • High-quality recognition in 190 languages

ABBYY FineReader 12 has a definition of stresses in Russian, which significantly increases the accuracy of recognition of educational literature. In addition, the recognition of texts in Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean), Hebrew and Arabic has been improved.

  • The new ABBYY FineReader recognizes documents in 190 world languages and any combinations of them, and dictionary support is provided for 48 languages. This means that the program offers options for replacing insecure recognized words and characters, and the user can choose the appropriate one.

  • Improved interaction with cloud services

By opening or saving the document, the user can access the cloud service listed among the favorite folders on the computer: Dropbox, Google Disk, Microsoft SkyDrive, Microsoft SharePoint.

ABBYY FineReader 12 is certified software for the Windows 8/8.1 operating system. The new program design fits into the OC interface, and access to the most common user scripts can be obtained from the start screen and launched in one click. ABBYY FineReader 12 supports basic gestures for touch devices - scrolling or zooming.

FineReader recognizes doctor's handwriting

On April 1, 2014, ABBYY announced the addition of benchmarks to ABBYY FineReader to help recognize medical handwriting.

The developers have included the MedText module in ABBYY FineReader and product users will not have to decipher doctors' prescriptions or referrals for treatment on their own: just scan the paper version of the document and recognize it using the program.

"Users have long asked us to add the ability to recognize medical handwriting to ABBYY FineReader. And this is understandable, because we all know how difficult it is sometimes to disassemble the text written by a doctor, - said Ivan Bodyagin, director of the product department for text recognition at ABBYY. "In the 12th version of FineReader, we significantly improved the recognition of complex Arabic, and the approaches used in this helped us work with the handwriting of doctors."

For people who do not know the language, Arabic writing looks like a complex sequence of related elements: it is often visually quite difficult to distinguish individual letters in words. To recognize the Arabic language, the recognition approach is used - not individual characters, but the entire word. Similar problems usually arise when trying to disassemble the handwriting of doctors, the developers used the experience of recognizing languages with complex writing when creating the MedText module.

The medical text recognition system is based on probabilistic graphics models (PGM), Bayesian networks (BN) and hidden Markov models (HMM). ABBYY FineReader recognizes physician handwriting in large blocks. In the most complex cases, the program treats entire lines as one recognition object, turning the image into a graph of probability states, from which meaningful text then crystallizes.

When creating the MedText module, ABBYY first applied a new development - the Method of detecting internal writing logic. With it, you can determine which of the curls in the line correspond to the real letters, and which were added by the doctor for beauty.

The system for decoding medical abbreviations, implemented in the updated product, provides not only the translation of the recipe into readable text, but explains to the user what the medical professional meant.

ABBYY FineReader Pro для Mac

On November 21, 2014, ABBYY released the ABBYY FineReader Pro update for Mac, a professional text recognition program.

ABBYY FineReader Pro for Mac

With the help of the program, you can translate images of documents and any type of PDF files into electronic editable formats without reprinting text. The new version of FineReader helps to automatically recognize and convert documents. This became possible through support for the Automator program and the AppleScript script language.

For example, if the user needs to regularly convert incoming documents or packages of documents from PDF to Microsoft Word and save them in the desired directory, or automatically recognize the screenshots created, you do not need to open ABBYY FineReader every time. The program will run automatically at the specified time or at a certain frequency, it is enough to configure the required task in Automator only once. The user can also create simple applications and run them manually by simply dragging and dropping documents into them.

ABBYY FineReader Pro for Mac View

The AppleScript scripting language allows developers or advanced users to create programs and tools to automate script-based tasks. With FineReader support, these tasks can include document recognition and conversion.

The new Mac version of ABBYY FineReader Pro supports OS X Yosemite.

The program can be purchased from the Mac App Store or from the ABBYY online store. Current ABBYY FineReader Pro for Mac users will receive an update for free, ABBYY FineReader Express Edition for Mac users will be able to update their version to professional at a special price.

2013: ABBYY FineReader Bank

September 10, 2013 - ABBYY announced the release of an updated version of ABBYY FineReader Bank - a solution that allows you to automate the entry of data from payment documents into the banking information system. It was developed specifically for the banking industry, taking into account its peculiarities and makes it possible to simplify the work with the most popular documents: payment orders, payment requirements and collection orders. The new version of the program has a modern architecture and supports the latest versions of operating systems. In addition, you have improved the ability to customize your product with specific business processes in mind. And for bank operators, working with the new ABBYY FineReader Bank has become even more convenient thanks to the modern interface.

ABBYY FineReader Bank allows you to enter payment documents without prior sorting: they are simply scanned in one stream, and the program automatically determines their types and extracts information from all required fields. With advanced document mining and recognition technologies, document processing takes only a few seconds. Thus, ABBYY FineReader Bank allows you to reduce processing time by up to 10 times, and bank employees have the opportunity to pay more attention to communicating with customers and solving other specialized tasks.

Many banks have already appreciated the important advantage of the ABBYY solution: after the automation of document entry, the number of data errors is reduced by at least 3 times. ABBYY FineReader Bank checks the recognized data for compliance with the established formats, rules and current databases, which guarantees the maximum accuracy of the entered information. After the automatic check stage, the data is sent for confirmation to the operator. If the program has detected that the rules established for the document have been violated, or other inaccuracies have been identified, the required fields are highlighted so that it is easier for the employee to pay attention to them and correct them if necessary.

The program interface is easy to customize according to user habits. An operationist can enter a document field value in one click, configure keyboard shortcuts for frequently used commands, and use hot folders that automatically send document scans for processing according to a given script.

ABBYY FineReader Bank is compatible with all existing banking systems and requires minimal support from the bank's system administrator. The updated version of the program is compatible with Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, Windows Server 2012, 2008, as well as with earlier operating systems.

2012: ABBYY FineReader 11

In the 11th version, the speed of processing documents has been increased to 45%. • Increased recognition speed and new performance tools. In the new version of ABBYY FineReader, the processing speed has been increased to 25% * for documents in Russian and other European languages and to 40% * for documents in Chinese , Japanese and Korean. At the same time, users can increase the processing speed using special modes:
    • The new black and white mode provides fast and accurate recognition of documents for which it is not important to maintain color (for example, business and financial documents or books). Black-and-white mode allows up to 30% * faster electronic document acquisition compared to standard full-color mode.
    • Improved Fast Recognition mode up to 70% * delivers results faster than the default standard mode. This mode is optimal for tasks where the speed of recognition is critical, for example, when creating archives or processing large volumes of documents with simple design.

  • Ability to create e-books. The new version of the program allows users to convert paper books, PDF articles, guides and text images into popular electronic formats for reading on portable devices. Ebooks created using ABBYY FineReader 11 can be sent directly from the application to the user account of the Amazon® Kindle™ device.
  • Save original artwork to Microsoft® Word, PDF, OpenOffice.org® Writer, and DjVu. Thanks to the improved Adaptive Document Recognition Technology (ADRT®), the new version of the program more accurately recreates the original structure of a multi-page document, including a table of contents, headers and footers, and other elements. Improved definition of vertical headers and footers (up to 70% more accurate results), margin text, charts, tables, and styles, reducing the time required to manually adjust a document. The program has improved the ability to save recognition results in OpenOffice format and added support for recording recognition results in DjVu format, which is often used when archiving documents, when it is necessary to preserve all the nuances of design (for example, when working with historical documents). When you save the text to an ODT file, the ABBYY FineReader 11 now more accurately recreate the headers and footers, page numbering, and table of contents. When recording recognition results in PDF format, the program began to support the creation of bookmarks, which makes it more convenient to navigate through the saved document.
  • Splits the scanned page stream into separate documents. This new tool will be useful when scanning several documents in a single stream at once, for example, when using network MFPs and scanners in the office. Dividing the flow of heterogeneous documents into separate documents according to their types allows not only to improve the quality of analysis of the structure of each of the documents, but also, if necessary, to time-distribute work with large volumes of documentation or distribute it among several employees.
  • New Style Editor. Allows you to more conveniently and quickly make changes to the design of a recognized document directly in the program, without using a word processor. Users can view styles in the document and modify or merge them as needed. Changes are automatically applied to the entire document, which frees you from manually editing each page.
  • New tools for processing document images. The improved image editor includes a complete set of tools for pre-processing document photos. Users can adjust the optimal brightness and contrast values of images, light and shadow intensity levels, as well as eliminate possible image quality shortcomings that occurred when shooting with a digital camera or mobile phone. For example, eliminate trapezoidal distortion, align curved lines after shooting a spread of books and magazines, crop extra edges of the image.
  • Improved PDF support. Three PDF save modes are available to the user: high quality (saving the quality of the original image), minimum size (for archiving) and balanced mode (for publishing on the Internet). The new version has improved compression technology (MRC - Mixed Raster Content), which reduces the file size when saving to PDF by up to 80%. This is due to layer-by-layer analysis of the original image and the use of various information compression techniques for illustrations, text, and background images.
  • Support for new languages. The new version of the application adds support for Arabic, Vietnamese and Turkmen (Latin). The total number of supported languages is now 189, and dictionary support is also provided for 45 languages, which provides higher quality recognition.
