New trend in Russian banks - moving away from mobile to web applications due to sanctions in American catalogs
The development of web services has become a new trend for Russian banks after their applications began to be removed from the Google Play and App Store directories. Market participants told TAdviser in July 2024 about the pros and cons of banking web applications (they are called PWA - Progressive Web App in technical jargon).
According to Maxim Lutzau, Vice President for Digital Business of MTS Bank, owners of devices based on iOS really actively use web interfaces, but in the market as a whole, the situation is such that user experience on the web is worse, and if there is an alternative, customers always choose native applications.
The development of web applications can really be called a trend in the Russian fintech market, said Oleg Komlik, director of the Digital Business Products division of Дом.рф Bank. A few years ago, all banks worked under the motto "mobile first" (a strategy in which a mobile version of the product is first developed, and only after that - tablet and desktop). But recently the situation has changed, and companies have begun to look towards web versions again, he said.
Marianna Danilina, head of strategy, research and analytics at the FinTech Association, agrees that there really is such a trend. According to her, the transition of Russian banks, which are included in the sanctions lists, to web applications is primarily due to the changed presence strategy, security requirements and the need to be independent of foreign providers.
Sber told TAdviser that by the end of July 2024, more than 82 million people use the mobile version of the SberBank Online application every month, and 5.5 million clients use the web version. The bank is developing a web application to give customers the opportunity to perform their usual operations in any way convenient for them (from a phone, computer or tablet), noted in Sberbank.
According to Pavel Kuznetsov, head of mobile development at the Выберу.ру financial marketplace, one of the advantages of web applications is guaranteed delivery of all updates to the user. Since each time you open such applications are downloaded again, the user always sees the latest version. At the same time, in the case of a mobile application, the rollout of updates is "quite undulating," Kuznetsov said. According to him, web development is cheaper than mobile: the frontend market is crowded, so it is easy to find a competent specialist.
It is possible to release one web version on the market faster and cheaper than to adapt the application for different operating systems, agrees Dmitry Grednikov, Deputy General Director for Technological Development of Innotech. He also drew attention to the fact that cross-platform solutions do not visually and functionally differ from mobile applications, which makes them convenient for customers and beneficial for banks.
Adaptive applications have performance problems and may not be as user-friendly as mobile versions.
They do not have such broad functionality as mobile ones (take at least push notifications), "says Yevgeny Tsarev, manager of RTM Group, an expert in the field of cybersecurity and IT law. - This is not pressing the bank icon in a smartphone. There are customers who have never used the web version at all - they will need to get used to it. Well, there are its own features with the protection of such products - here there are different vectors and threats compared to mobile ones. |
According to the head of the direction of mobile advertising and promotion of mobile applications icontext Alexander Klimakov, Web is a more outdated technology compared to app, for this reason it is necessary to take a step back in development on the scale of technology. This is not the most progressive decision, but it works stably, he said.
Dmitry Vladimirov, director of the BIA Technologies product office, sees no problems in terms of the convenience of working with web applications: they can adapt to different sizes of screens and devices. In addition, an additional advantage is the ability to simultaneously use a web application on several devices, leaving the session open on one device and continuing to work on another, the TAdviser interlocutor said.
Vladislav Larkin, Chief Operating Officer of CleverPumpkin mobile development studio, sees the following advantages of mobile applications: they have more access to the functions of the operating system and consume less energy. Therefore, only this type of application will remain in demand for serious projects, such as mobile banking, and web applications can be suitable for simple tasks or testing business hypotheses, she is sure.
Large Russian banks tried to publish their mobile applications in the App Store with other names and even under the guise of a non-banking program. So, VTB posted in the App Store a copy of its application under the guise of the restaurant directory "Everything is simple," but not for long.
Banks practiced updating mobile applications via a link from SMS or at a bank branch. New practices of credit institutions have generated a whole wave of fraud. There were many reports of attacks in the media when bank clients led by social engineers downloaded malware under the guise of applications, as a result, criminals gained access to people's accounts and deposits.
Web applications are more susceptible to phishing attacks, as users can be deceived by fake sites that imitate legitimate bank portals, said Pavel Kovalenko, director of the Infor mzaschita Fraud Prevention Center. Another PWA problem, according to the expert, is associated with data leakage risks: centralized storage of data on servers increases the risks of large leaks in the event of a successful hacker attack on the bank's servers.
At VTB, as senior vice president, head of the bank's digital business department Nikita Chugunov told TAdviser, they do not see a full-fledged departure from native applications to web applications.
Customers are used to using native applications. But of course all banks are developing web solutions for iPhone customers. This allows you to continue online service to customers who cannot update bank applications after they are removed from the App Store and other app stores, Chugunov added. |

Markswebb Rank & Report: Level of development of mobile banks in CIS countries
According to the results of the study of the effectiveness of mobile banks of the CIS countries Mobile Banking Rank CIS 2017, the top 5 best applications for Android and iPhone included the services of Tinkoff Bank, Alfa-Bank, Post Bank, VTB24 and Sberbank. The top ten applications were supplemented by Russian Raiffeisen Bank, two Belarusian banks (Belgazprombank and Alfa-Bank), Bank of Georgia and Kazakh [1]
The best mobile bank in Ukraine, according to the results of the study, was at the largest Ukrainian bank - Privatbank. Overall, it was ranked 11th on iOs and 12th on Android. Unibank had the best mobile bank among the studied Azerbaijani applications: it took 22nd place in the overall ranking.
andThe average rating for the country's mobile banks studied, as well as the assessment of the country's best mobile bank, characterizes the local level of development of mobile banking services. The highest estimates of the effectiveness of mobile banks are shown by Russian banks, followed by banks of Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Azerbaijan in descending order of average assessment.
Despite the fact that banks are striving for uniform development of mobile applications on both major mobile platforms, more than half of the banks studied have a difference in estimates between iOs and Android of more than 0.5 points, that is, it is quite noticeable for users.
The strongest differences between mobile banks on different platforms - more than 5 points (which is no longer just a tangible difference, but also obvious discrimination against customers using one of the platforms) - were shown by mobile banks of Belarusbank and Priorbank (Belarus), as well as applications of VTB and MTS Bank ( Russia).
On average, mobile apps on iOs are 0.5 points ahead of Android apps. This difference is due, firstly, to the historically established priority of iOS (a more premium platform, which is more often used by the management of the banks themselves), and secondly, to existing ideas about less security of applications on Android, which is why mobile banks on Android implement less opportunities for funds transfers and other potentially risky functions.
Leading mobile applications, as a rule, are not developed and developed by the largest players in the market. However, in Ukraine and Georgia, the largest banks on the market became the leaders in the mobile service at the same time.
NAFI: Internet Bank is ahead of mobile bank in popularity
Most of the representatives of the Internet audience use the services of an Internet bank (81%), less often they turn to mobile bank services - 69%. This is evidenced by the results of the NAFI study.
Among Internet users, the vast majority turn to Internet banking services (81%), with 64% doing it once a month or more often, and 17% less than once a month. The share of users is higher among Russians 35-44-years-old (86%), those who have higher education (84%), as well as among residents of cities with a population of over one million (86%). Less often use the Internet bank - young people (aged 18-24 years - 70% of information security users), and residents of cities with a population of less than 100 thousand people. (77%).
The mobile bank is used by 69% of representatives of the Russian Internet audience: 52% turn to it once a month or more often, 17% - less than once a month. Among women, such a service is in demand more than among men (72% versus 66%, respectively). Also, the share of mobile bank users is higher among the young audience (76% of MB users aged 25-34 years).
Among the most popular functions of mobile and Internet banking are payment for mobile communications (73% and 78% of users of these services, respectively) and tracking card or account transactions (61% and 73%, respectively). Such services as transfers to other people, Internet payments and transfers between their accounts using the Internet bank were carried out by 61% of respondents. The mobile bank was used for transfers to third parties 51%, for payment of the Internet 46%, and for transfers between their accounts - 44%. Payment for online purchases through an online bank was carried out by 53%, and through a mobile bank - 38% of users of these services. Least often, through remote services, they perform operations on investment products and services (no more than 2%).
Irina Tochilinskaya, head of financial research at the NAFI Analytical Center, explained the popularity of the Internet Bank for several reasons:
- Access. The share of owners of computers or tablets (from which it is more convenient to go to the Internet bank) is larger compared to owners of smartphones, most likely among active consumers of banking services this difference will be more obvious;
- Cost. Most banks use the services of an Internet bank for free, while a ward is charged for using a mobile bank, which, in addition to the cost of servicing the card and the payment for SMS notification, can deter economical customers from buying a smartphone application;
- Service. Mobile Bank - in most banks this is most often a truncated version of the Internet Bank, that is, the number of functions in the Mobile Bank is less than in the Internet Bank. Some transactions are not available in the mobile app.
2016: Markswebb Rank & Report on the effectiveness of mobile applications for individuals
Analytical agency Markswebb Rank & Report presented the results of the fifth wave of research on the effectiveness of mobile banking applications for individuals Mobile Banking Rank 2016.
In 2016, a record number of banks took part in the study: 25 entered the base list and 7 entered the additional on a commercial basis. In total, analysts investigated 97 mobile applications for iPhone and iPad, smartphones and tablets based on Android and smartphones based on Windows Phone.
The best mobile banks
Tinkoff Bank has the best mobile bank for iPhone and Android. The mobile application has fingerprint authorization (including for Android), an online chat with bank consultants, a contactless smartphone payment technology (only for Android) is implemented, as well as the ability to connect auto payments and scheduled payments, remotely order bank products, link a card of any bank to your account in the application and replenish the Tinkoff card from a card of another bank. Transaction history and statement are combined into a single event feed.
The best mobile bank for smartphones based on Windows Phone is Sberbank. Tinkoff lost its leading position due to reduced functionality (there are no filters in the history of operations, the form of payment of traffic police fines, the ability to pave the route to the ATM, etc.). In general, most of the studied mobile banks for smartphones based on Windows Phone have more "reduced" functionality compared to iPhone and Android.
Key findings and trends:
According to a study by Mobile Banking Rank 2016, 18 million people aged 18 to 64 use mobile banks in Russia. 89% of mobile bank users use the Internet bank too, and 17% of them use the mobile bank more often than the Internet bank.
Must-have functionality of mobile banking application: transfer between own accounts/cards and to cards of other customers, payment of utilities, mobile and landline telephone service, Internet providers, TV, creation and editing of payment templates, currency exchange, entry by short digital code or graphic key, opening deposits and accounts.
The functionality of card2card transfers and derivatives from them is expanding, including replenishment of an account/card from a card of another bank, payment of fines, taxes and utilities with debt search, replenishment from cards of other banks. Card2card transfers themselves become more convenient due to the possibilities of creating templates, scheduled payments and auto payments.
Call centers are replaced by online chats with bank consultants in the mobile application interface to quickly support mobile banking users.
Application interfaces become simpler and more comprehensible: complex transaction codes are replaced with understandable formulations, currency exchange is displayed in the list of operations as a separate function.
Banks add the ability to link cards of other banks to an account in a mobile application. So far, this function has been implemented by 5 banks.
Mobile banking 2017-2018
- Mobile banks are becoming a full-fledged tool for financial management, cards and banking products. It will be possible to connect it directly in the application without using the login and password of the Internet bank.
- Chat interfaces - mobile banking and banking in general will try to move to more familiar environments for customers - chats and instant messengers. The main question is how safe it will be.
- The development of smartwatch applications, which are implemented as an addition to a mobile jar for a smartphone or tablet.
- Gradually replacing complex interfaces, where the user needs to fill out complex forms, with simple ones. Example - the entry of the card number is replaced by scanning, gradually this functionality extends to scanning bill barcodes.
- Traditional payments will be replaced by auto payments when the payment or transfer transaction is initiated by the payee, and the cardholder can only see the notification and approve the transaction.
- Smartphone as a means of contactless payment - distribution of contactless payments using NFC technology. So far, the function has been implemented only in two banks - Tinkoff and MDM.
2014:15 billion rubles - turnover of payments through mobile applications of banks
In 2014, the turnover of payments using mobile banking applications in Russia amounted to 15.2 billion rubles, according to the research company J'son & Partners Consulting (data from May 2015). Analysts expect this figure to grow by 30% in 2015. According to J&P's forecast, in the period from 2014 to 2018, the turnover of payments using mobile banking applications in Russia will grow on average by 28% per year.
Against the background of the development of banking technologies, the need to increase efficiency and reduce costs, as well as serious competition in the market, many banks recognized the need to develop a remote channel both to serve existing customers and to attract new ones.
According to a J&P survey of mobile banking users in Russia, more than half use mobile banking once a week or more often.
At the same time, most often users check the balance and the latest operations - this function, according to the results of the study, has become the most popular. In addition, a significant proportion of respondents noted that they regularly make transfers between their accounts and transfers to other people, pay for telecommunications services and transfer money from card to card.
More than a third of respondents noted that in general they are satisfied with the work of the mobile application, while the most desirable functions are: accounting for personal expenses with visualization and simplifying authorization.
2013: Only 10% of banks have a mobile version of the site
Markswebb Rank & Report (Markswebb Rank and Report) reported in March 2013 the results of the installation part of the study of remote banking of individuals in Russia, conducted in January 2013. The study involved 200 largest Russian retail banks.
All the studied banks have official sites on the Internet, but only 10% of them have a mobile version, which allows you to get information about the bank and its services from your mobile phone in a form convenient for the user.
82% of banks offer their customers an Internet banking service - the ability to manage bank accounts via the Internet in one form or another. At the same time, 64% of banks offer Internet banking service in the form of their own secure website, and 21% offer their customers account management through partner 1 Internet banking system. The launch of new systems by the banks themselves and the connection of partner services equally affected the distribution of the service among the studied banks.
47% of banks offer their customers mobile banking - access to account management through a special site adapted for work through a mobile phone, or through a mobile application. Over the past year, the number of banks offering mobile banking has almost doubled.
The most common mobile bank interfaces were applications for operating system Android and applications for - the iPhone share of surveyed banks offering these applications increased over the year from 6% to 38% and from 9% to 36%, respectively. At the same time, the most significant contribution to the distribution of mobile banking services was made by services HandyBank that Faktura.ru launched applications for iPhone and Android in early 2012.
Java applications and mobile banking sites, a year ago being the main interfaces of mobile banking, have lost their significance over the year. New interfaces have practically ceased to appear, and the growth of the share of banks offering account management through a Java application or mobile site is due only to the growth of bank connections to HandyBank and Faktura.ru. systems.
