2018: Hacker attack on ATMs
Cybercriminals attack the American ATMs by means of the so-called jackpotting equipment (from engl. jackpot — the most big prize in a lottery, a jackpot). The companies Diebold Nixdorf and NCR, the world's largest producers of ATMs (ATM) warned about it at the end of January, 2018.
The Reuters agency reports that number of the attacks as a result of which ATMs literally "spit out" money as if game machines at a prize, grows worldwide, but the amounts of damage are still not clear as the victims and police often not to disclose a part. Diebold Nixdorf and NCR also do not open who suffered from actions of cybercriminals and how many money they managed to steal.
On January 27, 2018 the Krebs on Security resource reported that attacks on ATMs began in 2017 in Mexico.
On a request of the agency of Diebold Nixdorf and NCR company confirmed that on January 26 sent to clients of warning in connection with the last incidents.[1]
NCR follows from the letter, in the USA the first confirmed cases of the similar attacks are registered. The company made a reservation that ATMs of NCR are not mentioned, but emphasized that incidents are alarming at all producers of ATM equipment, and urged colleagues to take measures for protection of devices on the industry.
In turn, in Diebold Nixdorf informed clients that the American authorities warned the company about a possibility of the hacker attacks on its ATMs of the Opteva series which are laid off a few years ago earlier.
According to Krebs on Security, in the confidential message of the American intelligence agencies sent to banks it was said that as the purposes for the attacks hackers select separate ATM from drugstores and large network shops and also the "drive-thru" ATMs allowing to execute transactions without going out of the car.
It was said in the statement of Diebold Nixdorf, physical access to the ATM as criminals replace the hard drive is necessary for the attacks and using the endoscope click located in reset of settings.
