Web Development Market Size

2011

  • In 2011, the total market volume amounted to 14.9 billion rubles. Compared to 2010, the increase was 53% (data from CMS Magazine & Runet Rating).

  • The volume of the web development market in 2011 grew by 35% to about 11-12 billion rubles, according to 1C-Bitrix estimates. According to the Ashmanov & Partners company, the search engine optimization market grew in the same period by 20-25% to 9 billion rubles[1].

2010

"The web development market grew by about 30% in 2010 and amounted to 8-9 billion rubles," said RAEK Director Sergei Plugotarenko[2]

2009

The market for website development and support services in Runet amounted to about 7.2 billion rubles in 2009. This assessment is based on the results of the survey and the collection of data on the revenue of Russian web companies. Thus, the average company in 2009 received 6.5 million rubles from its customers.

Segment history

It is customary to count the history of the web development market in Russia from the founding of WebDesign, which later became the studio of Artemy Lebedev, and the Design of the X-Project studio.

2019: Web development for banks: Budgets are on the rise, but it's getting harder to fight for them

The structure of the custom development market for banks as of 2019 has developed in an interesting way. On the one hand, large IT integrators, contractors on large-scale infrastructure projects, suppliers of ABS, ERP, BPMS and other corporate systems. These are companies traditionally included in various lists of the top 100 in terms of revenue and number of employees.

On the other hand, there are web developers who close the tasks of developing application applications, microservices, frontend solutions. They're not the biggest teams. Today they are attracted to the development of user services, which have become a key competitive tool in the banking market. As a result, this part of the outsourcing market for banks has begun to grow noticeably in recent years - both in terms of investment and in terms of the growth of developer companies, which have transformed from web production into full-cycle IT developers.

This material is devoted to the web development segment. The author talked with representatives of such companies to understand how outsourcing is developing from the point of view of web integrators. 2010: 2,500 web studios

As of April 2010, about 2,500 web studios and 250 SEO companies specializing in search site promotion services were registered in CMS Magazine catalogs. Lists of web developers were compiled and verified with the participation of partners - studios and market observers in Moscow and in all major regions of Russia. Of the 2,500 companies registered in the catalog, about 40% respond to information requests and about 2,000 show signs of life.

Most of the web studios are concentrated in capitals and regions with a high level of broadband Internet access.

  • 38% of all Runet developers are located in Moscow,
  • 12% of companies are registered in St. Petersburg,
  • 5% in Yekaterinburg,
  • 4% in Novosibirsk and
  • 1-2% each (or 30-40 web studios) falls on other Russian million-plus cities.

2011: Rising popularity of Open Source and salaries

Survey of 450 web studios (May 2012):

  • About 5,000 web studios operate in Runet, of which about 2,600 are on the Russian market.
  • The average price of developing a conditional corporate site in 2011 increased to about 100,000 rubles. However, this indicator is highly dependent on the region.
  • The number of conditional "average" web studio is from four to fifteen people, and the portfolio has from ten to fifty projects. A larger staff and portfolio size are characteristic of Moscow web studios.
  • The main source of income for all studios is web development. However, Moscow web studios receive more money for project support and consulting, and regional companies earn more from SEO services. Another source of income is its own Internet projects.
  • The most important source of orders for web studios remains customer recommendations and links from developed projects. The value of search traffic for receiving customers is decreasing every year.
  • In 2011, the market for site management systems saw a rapid increase in the popularity of Open Source systems. Compared to 2010, the share of studios using them as a platform for creating sites has almost doubled.
  • In 2011, salaries in all specialties and regions grew rapidly in web studios. This indicates the active development of the industry and a high level of industry competition.
