2021: 4iG bought Digi Tavkozlesi Szolgaltat for €625 million

On November 30, 2021, Romanian pay television operator Digi signed a final agreement to sell its division in Hungary to 4iG. The telecom operator sold is the second largest in the country. The transaction value is €625 million.

The sale agreement followed a preliminary transaction concluded between the companies in March 2021, in which the Romanian subsidiary Digi RCS&RDS agreed to sell the local Hungarian subsidiaries Digi Tavkozlesi Szolgaltato, Invitel, I TV and Digi Infrastructure to 4iG.

Digi Communications, founded in 1992, also known as RCS&RDS, is a Romanian telecommunications holding company operating in Romania, Hungary, Spain and Italy, is one of the largest telecommunications operators in Southeast Europe and the largest cable and satellite television company in Romania.

By the beginning of 2021, there were 1.1 million Digi subscribers in the Hungarian market throughout the country, while the number of revenue generating units (RGU) exceeded 2.5 million. The company is considered the second largest provider of services in the markets of broadband access, pay television and fixed telephone communications in the country. In 2019, the operator launched a mobile service covering 90% of the local population.

The sale is part of Digi's new focus on its main market and new markets in Western Europe. 4iG said this would lead to the creation of a new regional telecom holding company, which owns Antenna Hungária, Digi, Invitel, Invitech and AH Net in Hungary, and plans to expand through the acquisition of western Balkans in the region.

4iG said it expects the transaction to close to acquire Digi in January 2022 after regulatory approval.

Hungary is a market where we work for most of our lives. We have built a business there with the local team, which we are very proud of and which is one of the largest, most technologically advanced and most successful operators in this market. However, given the reorientation of our strategy to Western European markets, it is time to allow our partners to 4iG continue this wonderful story, and we are confident that they will continue our work and increase the success of this operator, "said Sergey Bulgats, CEO of Digi Communications NV.

The acquisition of Digi is an important strategic step for our company in several areas. Thanks to a successful agreement with RCS&RDS Media Group and our recent domestic and international acquisitions in the telecommunications industry, we have laid the foundation for a new regional telecommunications group over the past year, 4iG said in a statement.[1]
