History
2024: Refusal to accept bank cards due to the failure of payment terminals throughout Russia
On June 3, 2024, a large-scale failure of payment terminals occurred in the Verny supermarket chain, covering about 1,000 company stores throughout Russia. As a result of the incident, buyers lost the opportunity to pay for goods with bank cards at all retail outlets of the retailer.
According to the press service of "Verny," the cause of the problems was a hacker attack, which resulted in failures in the functioning of a number of systems. In addition to problems with accepting cards, customers also faced inaccessibility of online orders due to a broken site and a mobile network application.
Cashless payments do not work in Verny grocery supermarkets in Yekaterinburg, customers confirmed to the local portal E1.ru. They noted that the calculation in stores is carried out in the old fashioned way - with banknotes and coins, and trading halls and store doors are covered with advertisements apologizing to customers. "
Representatives of Verny assured that the company is taking all necessary measures to quickly restore the performance of the affected services. Nevertheless, according to Mikhail Burmistrov, CEO of Infoline-Analytics, if the solution to the problem is delayed, the retailer's daily losses can reach 120-140 million rubles, and the weekly damage can exceed 1 billion rubles.
The expert suggested that the IT infrastructure of Verny could suffer from an attack by a ransomware virus, aimed primarily at backing up data. According to Burmistrov, the recovery process after such an incident will be time-consuming and lengthy.
The general director of Verny Oleg Vysotsky reports that the main version of what happened is a hacker attack to extort funds from the company. She is confident that the current situation once again emphasizes the importance of ensuring reliable protection of retailers' information systems from potential threats that could paralyze their activities and lead to significant financial losses.[3]
