MTS completes construction of federal IoT network

On June 24, 2022, MTS announced the completion of the construction of the federal network of the NB-IoT standard, which the company calls the largest in Russia. It is available in all regions of the telecom operator's presence.

By the end of June 2022, MTS for the Internet of Things in Russia covers over 90% of potential users. There are more than 45 thousand base stations in the network, in the first quarter of 2022 their number increased by 14% compared to the same period in 2021. In 2022-2023 it is planned to deploy more than 10 thousand base stations of the NB-IoT standard. The company will continue to upgrade the network to provide customers with sustainable coverage in hard-to-reach areas of the country or away from human settlements.

MTS completes construction of federal IoT network

By June 24, 2022, services for more than 76 thousand business clients are operating on the NB-IoT network of MTS, including large resource-supplying organizations, enterprises of the housing and communal services segment and manufacturers of smart devices. MTS infrastructure now allows implementing any large-scale federal projects based on NB-IoT. In the future, the network can work with several hundred million devices across Russia, since one BS can serve up to 50 thousand connected devices in the NB-IoT standard.

Sales of NB-IoT Smart Power Metering Solutions

As it became known on January 21, 2022, large cellular operators in Russia began to sell smart electric meters. New business can bring telecommunications companies tens of billions of rubles.

As told in Izvestia , MTS the operator has developed a comprehensive solution that includes a full cycle of data collection. It includes an electric meter with a module for connecting to a cellular network using technology, NB-IoT an automated electricity metering system (ASCUE) and means for transmitting data traffic. The device automatically transmits readings over the cellular network to the electricity metering systems supplying the organization, or to the client's information systems.

Mobile operators in Russia began to sell smart electric meters

Tele2 also has an NB-IoT solution. In particular, it was recommended by Mosenergosbyt for use by energy enterprises, the operator's representative Daria Kolesnikova told the publication.

VimpelCom is preparing to offer customers a full range of services to create a system for commercial and technical accounting of electricity, in particular, to ensure the supply of metering devices. The company is also developing a platform for accounting for gas, water and thermal energy, and is also engaged in the design and commissioning of metering units and systems, VimpelCom reported.

Vladislav Ozorin, President of the Association of Energy Enterprises of the North-West Federal District, Deputy Chairman of the Scientific Expert Council on power of the Federation Council, considers it inappropriate to allow telecom operators to sell and install smart meters: in accordance with the requirements of the FZ-52, energy sales companies are responsible for installing smart metering devices in the housing and communal services sector. The installation of such devices is the task of not only resource-supplying organizations, but also administrations of regions and municipalities, the parliamentarian noted.

According to experts interviewed by the newspaper, the annual revenue of operators from servicing smart electric meters will be at least 30 billion rubles. This is more than the earnings of cellular companies on all combined IoT projects.[2]

2019: MTS began distributing NB-IoT SIM cards to legal entities

On May 14, 2019, MTS announced the start of mass distribution of SIM cards for the Internet of Things. The telecommunications operator has launched this program to test the NB-IoT communication standard, the company's press service said.

The cost of one SIM card, which can be received by legal entities and corporate subscribers of MTS, is a symbolic 1 ruble. Each client can receive an unlimited number of SIM cards. The volume of annual traffic on them is 12 MB, and the maximum data transfer rate is limited to 159 Kbps per second. MTS customers will also be able to test the platform for managing Internet of Things devices.

MTS began distributing SIM cards for the Internet of Things to legal entities in order to test the NB-IoT network

By mid-May 2019, the MTS NB-IoT network operates on the basis of several tens of thousands of base stations deployed in more than 50 Russian cities. Companies can use this technology in logistics, power, retail, medicine, smart city infrastructure monitoring and management systems, etc. NB-IoT has high potential in the housing and communal services sector .

Earlier in 2019, MTS launched a platform for managing IoT equipment. Using this solution, built on Nokia technologies, you can simultaneously manage an office building, parking, video surveillance, as well as control the consumption of water, light and other indicators.

NB-IoT is the main communication standard for the development of the Internet of Things, which, compared to alternative solutions, is characterized by energy efficiency and the ability to transmit small messages at high speed. To switch to NB-IoT, operators do not need to rebuild the infrastructure - just update the software of the base stations, which will provide the desired coverage.

In addition to MTS, MegaFon, VimpelCom, Rostelecom and Tele2 are also involved in the development of NB-IoT networks in Russia.
