2021: Integration with Blender

On August 10, 2021, Nvidia announced a major expansion of NVIDIA Omniverse through integration with Blender and Adobe.

According to the company, Blender, an open-ended 3D animation tool, source code received support for the Universal Scene Description (USD) format and thus opened artists access to Omniverse production pipelines. Adobe is working with NVIDIA on the Substance 3D plugin, which will provide support for Substance Material for Omniverse and open material editing options for Omniverse and Substance 3D users.

NVIDIA Omniverse allows designers, artists and editors to work together in real time in various software applications in a common virtual world from anywhere. As of August 2021, the platform is being tested by specialists from more than 500 companies, including SHoP Architects, South Park and Lockheed Martin. Since the launch of the open beta in December 2020, Omniverse has been downloaded more than 50,000 times.

The metaverse is an immersive and connected virtual world. In it, artists can create digital scenes, architects can create beautiful buildings, and engineers can create products for houses. These creations can be transferred to the physical world after they are honed in the digital world.

The key to the introduction of Omniverse in the industry is the open USD format from Pixar - the basis of the Omniverse collaboration and modeling platform, which allows large teams to work simultaneously in different applications on a single 3D scene. This open standard gives software partners several ways to expand and connect to Omniverse: through USD support, creating a plugin or Omniverse Connector.

Apple, Pixar and NVIDIA have joined forces to empower USD with physics and use open standards to support 3D workflows across billions of devices. Blender and NVIDIA jointly added USD support to the Blender 3.0 version for millions of artists using this software.

NVIDIA adds support for USD and materials in the alpha version of Blender 3.0, which will soon be available for developers.

NVIDIA and Adobe are working together on the Substance 3D plugin, which will open material editing opportunities for Omniverse and Substance 3D users. Artists and designers will be able to work directly with Substance materials obtained from the Substance 3D Asset platform or created in Substance 3D applications, which generally optimizes the workflow in 3D.

2020: Launch of the beta version of the Nvidia Omniverse platform

On December 15, 2020, Nvidia announced the launch of the open beta NVIDIA Omniverse.

The platform increases efficiency, productivity and flexibility as teams from the same room and anywhere in the world can enter Omniverse and work together on projects with real-time photorealistic rendering.

As part of the open beta version, several Omniverse applications have been released that can be used within Omniverse, including Omniverse View for architectural, design and construction specialists; Omniverse Create for designers, content creators, and media, entertainment, and product/development professionals; and Omniverse Kaolin for deep learning experts.
