Start of cargo navigation testing for drivers and businesses

On July 31, 2020, Yandex announced that the Yandex.Navigator update will be released in the near future, in which truck drivers will be able to build routes taking into account the rules and restrictions governing the movement of freight transport. Cargo navigation technology will also be integrated into the Yandex.Routing commercial service, which is used by various businesses to manage transport and monitor delivery.

application Drivers will be able to indicate that they are traveling by truck, as car well as add its parameters: length, width, height, maximum permitted weight, actual weight, axle load, carrying capacity, trailers and environmental class. After the driver adds the truck parameters in the application settings, the Navigator will build routes taking them into account. At the start, cargo navigation will be available To Moscow in both the area and. St. Petersburg Leningrad Region Gradually, cargo navigation will appear in other regions. Russia

To launch cargo routing, more than 10 thousand kilometers of roads in Moscow and the region have been studied, the Navigator algorithms have been taught to understand where you can go by truck. To collect information, pictures of roads were used, which, among other things, are taken by users themselves using the People's Map mobile application.

Last year, Navigator learned to distinguish between a residential area and a "cargo frame" zone in the capital. Now the functionality for professional truck drivers is expanding.

A cargo frame is a system of large streets in different parts of Moscow, beyond which trucks cannot travel without special permission. The frame in Moscow is designed for car drivers from 2.5 tons to 12 tons. From August 1, 2020, the new rules for the passage of trucks (cargo frame) will begin to operate throughout Moscow within the Moscow Ring Road. All restrictions are immediately taken into account by the Navigator.

There is a big request for cargo navigation from professional drivers. According to Yandex estimates, there are about 6.5 million different trucks in Russia. Of these, in Moscow and the region about 700 thousand.

Cargo navigation will be used in commercial routing for corporate clients of the Yandex.Routing logistics platform. The platform is already used by dozens of companies with a logistics component, per day "Routing" provides the movement of 10 thousand units of commercial vehicles.

After adding cargo navigation, algorithms will be improved. The solution will be of interest to companies from such areas of business as FMCG manufacturers and distributors, Retail (delivery of goods from distribution centers to stores outside the cities), intercity freight transportation of courier services, delivery of large-sized goods in the field of e-commerce.

Prior to this, most of the planning of freight transport routes, which is subject to various restrictions, was carried out manually by regular logistics companies. With the addition of full-fledged cargo navigation, it will be possible to automate this process and perform it using algorithms - such optimization can reduce transportation costs by up to 25%.[1]

2019: Launch navigation for trucks

On November 8, 2019, Yandex announced the launch of navigation for trucks. The function of building routes along the cargo frame of Moscow - the streets on which cars from 2.5 to 12 tons are allowed to drive - will work in Yandex.Navigator in December.

To build a route with the cargo frame in mind, you will need to enable a special setting in the Navigator. When deviating from the frame, the navigator will warn that the driver will need permission, for example, to exit the adjacent street.

If the destination point is outside the framework, Navigator will warn you where the "cargo frame" ends and remind you that a special permission is needed next, Yandex said.

You can build routes for trucks only with the Internet. If the connection disappeared for a short time, and then appeared, the application will rebuild the route along the frame.

Information about cargo frames will help businesses build routes so that they arrive on time and do not receive fines for violating the zone.

The cargo frame will also be taken into account when building routes in the Yandex.Routing service, which is used by logistics, courier and other companies dealing with cargo transportation. This innovation, as stated in Yandex, will allow businesses to more efficiently use freight transport in logistics planning.

Yandex.Navigator is provided with data on which streets are included in the frame by the Center for Traffic Management (DPC). The application will consider new parcels as they are incorporated into the wireframe. After launch, navigation on the cargo frame will work in test mode.

By November 8, 2019, the cargo frame operates in three districts of Moscow (North, East and North-East administrative districts). In December, he will appear in the Southeast Administrative District.

Warning about cameras and road events

On October 25, 2017, Yandex announced that Yandex.Navigator began to warn about cameras and road events always, and not just in the route mode. Prompts can work in the background - when the application is curtailed or the device screen is turned off. You can enable or disable tooltips in the settings.

Yandex.Navigator (2017)

Yandex receives data on accidents and road works from drivers. You can mark an event on the map directly from the application without taking your hands off the wheel - suffice it to say: "Listen, Yandex. There is an accident. Add a label. " Yandex learns about the location of cameras from various sources, including from users of the Yandex.Maps editor and drivers who mark cameras in the Navigator. If the label is often confirmed, information about it is additionally checked, after which it is fixed on the map. Thanks to this, Yandex knows about 20,000 cameras.

"Often people know the city quite well so they don't have to tell where to turn. But signals about speeding and warnings that the camera or road was dug up in front are useful to everyone. Moreover, the same camera or traffic jam due to an accident may suddenly appear even on a familiar route. "

Taking into account the speed of movement of machine flows

Yandex.Navigator: interface

On October 2, 2017, Yandex announced that Yandex.Navigator began to take into account the speed of cars in different flows of the highway. This allows you to more accurately determine the fastest travel option and save the driver a little more time.

As you know, the speed of cars in different flows of the same highway sometimes varies greatly - for example, some cars can stand in traffic at the exit, while the rest of the cars drive directly without delay. The navigator analyzes the speed of movement of each stream and takes it into account when calculating the travel time. At the same time, it displays on the map the congestion of the road, taking into account the flow in which the driver is driving.

If the Navigator detects a faster route on the road, it will offer it to the driver: in the latest version of the application for comparing routes, you need to make only two "clicks." The application will tell the driver about a faster path if this travel option saves more than five minutes, and no less than a kilometer before the desired maneuver.

When choosing the optimal route, the Navigator analyzes not only the current situation, but also the history of traffic jams over the past few months. This allows you to predict how the state of affairs will change while the driver is driving. A special machine learning algorithm is responsible for the forecast.

The application is also able to detect dull traffic jams: if the Navigator understands that cars stop driving on some section of the road, it shows a warning.
