QR code

The QR code represents the matrix code which special sensors or normal cameras can recognize as the two-dimensional image. Such code made of a set of small squares allows to transfer any information quickly. At the same time code capacity for numbers is limited to 7089 digits, and for Cyrillics in Windows-1251 encoding — 2953 letters.


The QR code is a widespread method of information transfer. This kind of the usual barcode allows the owner of the smartphone to receive additional data on a product or museum piece, to instantly enter contact information in the address directory or to open the website. As it became known on November 7, 2019, payment of purchases by the QR code through SBP is going to start across all Russia in 2020. The head of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation Elvira Nabiullina in the State Duma reported about it.

According to Nabyullina, as of November the payment system by QR codes is tested in several retail chain stores, and from next year will be started through the whole country, and it will be possible to pay with its help for goods, services, including in shops. In particular, Russian Standard, VTB, Rosbank, AK Bars Bank participate in testing of technology with retail chain stores Bank.

In the summer the first deputy chairman of the Bank of Russia Olga Skorobogatova declared plans to start service of payments by the QR code in SBP for a wide range of users in September, 2019.[1]

On May 8, 2019 it became known that testing of payment of purchases by the QR code in shops within the System of fast payments starts on August 30, 2019.

A transfer to legal entities will be made using two types of QR codes  — static and dynamic.

It was confirmed, in particular, by the associate director of department of retail products and marketing of Rosbank Lidiya Kashirina, the deputy chairman of board of Sovcombank Alexey Panferov and the Head of Department of online sales of Alfa-Bank Alexander Solonin.

The static QR code will contain data on the account of the seller. To pay purchase with its help, the buyer should scan the QR code in mobile application of bank, to specify the amount on phone and to pay purchase. The dynamic QR code will include information as about the account of shop, and the amount of purchase therefore for payment the buyer will be limited to scanning of the code.

The press service of the Central Bank reported that for May 8, 2019 together with banks development of the standard of formation of both static, and dynamic QR codes which will be applied including in the System of fast payments is conducted.

Both types of QR codes will not demand installation in outlets of the additional hardware. The deputy head of Sovcombank Alexey Panferov told that it will be necessary to update software of the cash register only. The development director of the payment solutions "Evotor" Zaur Besolov specified that the cash desk with flexible IT infrastructure which will be able to generate the QR code will be required or to read out it using the built-in camera.  Also banks will need to finish the mobile applications[2].

2017: The Russian torpedoes will mark with QR codes

Torpedoes, rockets and other weapons of destruction used by the VTR of Russia from current year will be marked with special QR codes, the Izvestia newspaper writes. Such tags will also be applied on packagings of ammunition and transport and starting containers. For arms the St. Petersburg concern of naval underwater weapons Gidropribor and Scientific Devices company[3] are engaged in development of codes [4][5].

Will be applied on the ammunition used by the VTR of Russia, QR codes with method of a laser engraving. Developers believe that such method will allow to avoid counterfeit or changes of codes as in the first case the engraving will not conform to the standard, and in the second — intervention will be noticeable.

Works on creation of QR tags were conducted since 2014. In addition to tags developers created also the special portable equipment which allows to read out quickly codes in any conditions — in a warehouse, in a field or by the ship. What is this equipment is not specified; any smartphones with the camera can read out not ciphered QR codes today.

According to military and developers, use of QR codes will allow to solve at the same time several problems. In particular, they will significantly simplify storage of ammunition and control of their expenditure. Besides, QR codes will become some kind of protection against counterfeits and illicit trafficking in ammunition.

Possibly in the future QR codes on ammunition will allow to use also the systems of the automatic choice and giving of ammunition on the fleet. Such opportunity is already implemented in the perspective main fighting T-14 tanks based on the Armata platform and self-propelled howitzers of "Koalition-SV". In them the autoloader will read out codes from ammunition and on and to a basis to select requested by the operator-shooter.

The set of important information, including storage lives and ballistic characteristics will be entered in the code applied on shots for tanks and self-propelled howitzers. The last during charging will be read out and be given to a management system for tank fire which taking into account these data will already conduct aim fire.


In 2014 mobile payment technologies in Russia received "second wind" due to very big distribution of smartphones. Penetration of mobile phones in Russia makes 156%, from them more than 60% are smartphones already today, and in 2015 this share will reach already 80%. The J'son & Partners Consulting company provided in the summer of 2012 results of a research of the market of QR codes in Russia and in the world which was prepared together with Smartest and WapStart companies. According to experts, the Russian market of QR codes will develop with lag from the market of the USA and Western Europe for 2-3 years. By the end of 2014 the number of users of QR codes in Russia will be about 15% of number of owners of smartphones.

As noted in the research J'son & Partners Consulting, one of the most essential drivers of distribution of QR technology in the world in consumer segment is growth of number of owners of smartphones and tablet PCs as with their help QR codes become available to end users. After scanning of the code the user most often is automatically redirected on the corresponding website where obtains more detailed information on goods or service. An essential factor of growth of penetration of QR is also informing the population on this technology.

Survey of owners of mobile phones in the Russian million-plus cities conducted by J'son & Partners Consulting together with Smartest and WapStart companies in July, 2012 showed that a third of respondents (33%) are informed on QR codes, i.e. they know and understand as it is possible to use this technology. However at the same time 59% do not know about QR codes, and 8% from among respondents are misinformed (are mistaken in knowledge of technology).

Nearly a quarter of the polled users (23%) already scanned the phone QR codes. And nearly a half of them (48%) do it constantly or carried out such manipulations many times.

Concerning the purposes for which the Russian users read out QR codes the most part from among the polled users of QR codes (84%) passed after their reading to the website. The third part (33%) could consider a contact information of the person and save them on phone. 28% received advertizing, and 21% other types of content (music, pictures, the presentations and so on) and 8% - video. Only 6% specified that the QR technology helped them to check in for the flight, an action and to make to that similar actions.

Let's note also that within the poll of 8% of respondents noted that cannot physically use QR technology as their phones are not equipped with the camera. It is remarkable that a share of those users of mobile phones who have the camera in phone, but yet was not scanned by codes, makes 69%.

As basic reasons which prevent respondents to use QR codes it was in most cases specified "there is no special program in phone" (44%) and "do not know as to make it" (44%). 25% noted that they have no need to use QR codes.

"The main expectations of the Russian users of mobile communication from QR technology regarding services is a fast transition to the website, obtaining detailed information on goods or service, operational preserving of contact information of the person on phone, receiving discounts, use of QR as means of identification, fast registration for a plane flight or trains", said in the research J'son & Partners Consulting.

In practice, in Russia QR codes are successfully used in trade, in advertizing and marketing and also in such industries as logistics, the banking sector and transport.

So, according to J’son & Partners Consulting, QR codes in this or that type are used in 6 of 20 studied retail networks located in the territory of Russia. QR codes are used by transport companies, in particular airlines which suggest passengers to issue the boarding pass using this technology. In outdoor advertizing and in printed media QR codes are used for promotion of the most different types of goods – from home and electronic appliances before car sale.

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, the Russian market of QR codes will develop with lag from the market of the USA and Western Europe for 2-3 years. At the same time growth of penetration of modern smartphones with the built-in cameras and aspiration of business to increase the efficiency, including due to the innovation advertizing using QR codes will be the main driver.

According to J'son & Partners, in 2011 the number of users of smartphones in Russia was 16 million, and the number of users of QR codes in our country was 1.1 million. Experts predict that by the end of 2012 the number of users of smartphones in Russia will be 27.2 million, and the number of users of QR codes at the same time will increase to 2.4 million. By the end of 2013 the predicted number of users of smartphones will make 44 million, the number of users of QR codes will increase to 5.3 million. By the end of 2014 the number of users of QR codes in Russia will be about 9 million users, or about 15% of number of owners of smartphones (60.4 million).

Concerning a situation in the market of QR codes in the world, within the research the following data are provided: QR codes gained the greatest distribution in the world in the retail sector (on packagings of products), in advertizing and in coupon services. Users most often want to receive by means of this technology coupons and discounts, the additional information about products and also to undergo registration procedure.

QR codes are most popular in Japan (they are used by more than 50% of users of mobile communication), in the USA (14 million users) and in Great Britain (4 million users). By the number of the scanned QR codes the USA, Canada, Great Britain and Japan are in the lead (data on scanning by means of one of the most popular applications – YouScan were considered here).

With reference to data of, information according to which among operating systems on smartphones which were used for scanning of QR codes the greatest popularity to results of 2011 was shown iOS (53.7%) and Android (34%), which with a big separation advance RIM (BlackBerry) from 7.4%, Windows (2.4%) and Symbian (Nokia) from 1.1% is provided in a research.

2017: QR payments:  the specification from  EMVCo

EMVCo, the international organization on development of standards of operational compatibility of smart cards, issued in the summer of 2017 two technical specifications for payment transactions based on QR codes for the mode of their use of TSP and consumers[6].

The definitions of payments given in specifications using QR codes simplify development and in the long term broaden the sphere of use of payment solutions based on QR codes in the world.

Two-dimensional machine-readable QR codes are more and more widely used for implementation of mobile payments in sales points. The specification of the EMV QR codes for payment systems supports two scenarios of use of QR codes at implementation of payments:

  • regime of the consumer — the client brings the QR code to the display of the mobile device, and in TSP for its reading the optical scanner is used;
  • the TSP mode – the QR code is displayed in trade enterprise on the display, and the client uses the mobile device for an egoskanirovaniye.

Thanks to the clearness of the TSP specifications will be able to provide the standardized format of work with payment solutions based on QR codes of different suppliers. Consumers will also win at the expense of bigger degree of monotony, and, therefore, convenience and simplicity.

The EMV specifications of QR codes for payment systems can coexist with own solutions based on QR codes of different developers. All EMV specifications are provided on a grant basis to all concerned parties on the EMVCo website.

EMVCo also develops the conceptual scheme of self-testing of the modes of specifications for TSP and consumers. It will allow specialists to analyze in points of interaction as far as generation and interpretation of their QR codes conforms to requirements of specifications of the EMV QR codes. It, as expected, will become possible at the beginning of 2018.
