2022: Increasing self-service checkouts to 14,000 devices

The Pyaterochka retail chain in 2022 increased the number of self-service checkouts (CSR) to more than 14,000 devices. As of February 2023, every fifth store of the chain is equipped with CSR, and they already account for about 40% of the traffic of the point. This was announced on February 9, 2023 by X5 Group.

Since the launch of CSR, the average time to make a purchase using them has been halved: from almost 2 minutes to 68 seconds. In 2022, the throughput of cash processing units (RKU) increased by 8%, to 56 checks per hour. Customers on average take 2 to 4 weeks to get used to CSR, after which purchases in this way become a regular action.

In 2022, the retail chain also launched payment through the fast payment system (FPS): the service is available at all CSRs and at regular cash desks already in 3000 Pyaterochka stores. When paying for CSR, the SBP is chosen as a method of payment for about 4% of guests. By the end of March 2023, Pyaterochka plans to connect all stores in the regions of its presence to the SBP.

For the convenience of guests, the network also installed "boxes for impulse demand" at CSR terminals. To purchase chocolates, snacks, chewing gum, promotional goods or other necessary trifles, Pyaterochka guests do not need to specifically enter the general cash zone if they prefer to use self-service terminals: goods of the so-called "impulse demand" can be purchased "without leaving the cash desk." The pilot project in 700 stores in Moscow and the Moscow region, according to network analysts, showed positive sales dynamics: + 37% of RTO by names placed in the calculation. As of February 2023, such boxes have already been installed in more than 3,000 stores. In addition, at the end of 2022, guests of the retail chain had the opportunity to withdraw cash at the checkout when making a purchase. The service is already available to cardholders issued by Russian banks of any payment systems in more than 17,000 stores. On average, customers use this opportunity 1.5 times a day per store.

Pyaterochka continuously improves the infrastructure of the trading floor and increases the level of service for guests, including equipping stores with self-service checkouts, introducing a fast payment system and additional options for customers. Already almost half of the guests in stores where there is CSR prefer to pay for their purchases in this way. The share of traffic at self-service cash desks in 2022 increased by 16%. It is important for us to earn the trust of our guests not only with low prices and fresh quality products, but also due to excellent service, convenience of shopping and creating a modern and positive atmosphere in stores, - said Denis Tkach, Business Support Director of the Pyaterochka retail chain.

As of February 2023, CSRs are installed in more than 3,700 stores of the chain. These self-service devices are in-house Kh5 designs.

2020: Installing self-service checkouts

On April 8, 2020, a X5 Retail Group multi-format retail company Russia managing trade the networks "," Five"" and Intersection"Carousel," announced TAdviser the start self-service cash desks of its own development in stores of the Pyaterochka retail chain in all regions of its presence. Due to the massive introduction of self-service services, the number of customers' contacts with store staff will be minimized. 1,435 cash registers are already operating in 369 stores. In total, 12,000 "digital cashiers" are planned to be installed in 2020.

Self-service cash desk (CSR) is a hard and soft-ware product completely created in the Kh5 innovation laboratory. In the serial release, the X5 ticket office costs 4 times cheaper than analogues of self-service systems, and surpasses them in functionality. The devices are assembled at 5 Russian enterprises, creating additional jobs.

According to the results of the pilot, held in August-September 2019, it was decided to scale the CSR system. Due to the volume of purchase of components, the cost of the cash desk was reduced by another 25%, while technical support and maintenance is fully integrated into the existing IT system of the store. Thanks to this, the cost of operating such devices is 5 times less than market counterparts. 32,000 buyers in the survey gave an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 for the operation of the device.

The pilot showed that a group of 4 CSRs occupying an area of one standard cash center attracts up to 40% of traffic. The increase in traffic in individual pilot stores amounted to 7% due to an increase in the speed of service at the checkout. The average purchase at the self-service checkout takes only 44 seconds. The introduction of such devices increases the RTO of the outlet by several percent, solves the problem with queues at the box office and contributes to the growth of NPS (customer satisfaction).

Retail chains have been in dire need of mass introduction of self-service cash desks for several years. However, the high cost of purchasing and maintaining such equipment sharply reduced the economic efficiency of investing in this technology and prevented the system from scaling up in thousands of stores. This self-service cash desk, fully developed by Kh5, has become a breakthrough for Russian retail - it is already changing the purchasing experience for millions of our customers, which contributes to the growth of such indicators as NPS, RTO and traffic,

Self-service cash desks will be installed both in Pyaterochki of the updated format and in some existing stores of the chain. In April 2020, the pilot of the "digital cashiers" will Kh5 begin in the supermarkets of the Perekrestok chain.

The Kh5 Innovation Laboratory continuously improves the system, including based on feedback from customers and store employees. In the latest version of the CSR, a weighing platform is integrated, the internal arrangement of elements is optimized, some components are standardized. Own CSR is the first step towards creating an expanded self-service system with elements of SelfScanning, Scan & Go, fast payment system (QR code), payment by face. The self-service Cass is able to adapt to any use cases and payment forms - it is already equipped with a 3D camera for payment using Face ID technology, as well as a microphone and speakers for working with voice services.
