Launch of the construction of a multi-storey data center in the north of St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg, the construction of a new multi-storey data processing center (DPC) has begun, which is planned to be launched by the end of 2025. Information about the project became known on October 14, 2024.

According to Telesputnik, Denis Karailanidi, Development Director of Key Point Group of Companies, revealed the details of the project. The new data center will be located in the north of the city within walking distance of the metro station. The exact location has not yet been disclosed, since the site approvals are at the final stage.

A multi-storey
data center began to be built in the north of St. Petersburg

The project provides for the reconstruction of the existing building for the needs of a modern data center. The choice in favor of a multi-storey structure is due to economic feasibility in urban conditions. The planned capacity of the data center will be at least 440 racks, with the potential to increase to 4400 units.

Karailanidi noted that the construction of the data center is planned to be completed in 12 months, and under favorable circumstances even faster. The renovation includes reconfiguring the premises for the needs of the data center, installing the necessary infrastructure and upgrading the elevators to meet the Tier III standard.

The choice of location is due to the high demand for data center services in St. Petersburg and the projected shortage of standing places in 2024-2026. According to Karailanidi, the St. Petersburg market is distinguished by sophisticated customers, which makes the location of the data center within the city strategically important.

The project is being implemented taking into account the balance between the availability of energy resources and proximity to potential customers. The cost of the land plot, even if it reaches ₽300 -400 million, is seen as insignificant in the scale of the total costs of building and operating a data center[1]

It will provide not only storage and processing of user information, but also the possibility of expanding the coverage area of mobile operators, the development of IT technologies in housing and communal services, in the social sphere of the region... This is far from the first private data center operating in the region - the Novosibirsk region is becoming the unconditional leader in the east of the country to create such an infrastructure, - said Travnikov.[2]

The general designer and contractor of the facility was the company "Free Technologies Engineering," technical consulting is carried out by the company "DCS Kvadrat." Key Point also named VimpelCom as one of the key partners in this project. The team of the Eastern region "VimpelCom" transferred the rights to the site for the data center to the Novosibirsk division of Key Point and provides technical support in organizing external engineering communications. Key Point, when creating a data center, ensures the organization of part of its technological site for VimpelCom equipment. This, as noted, makes Beeline Business one of the largest clients of the new data center.

Commissioning of the data center in Vladivostok

The first commercial data processing center in the Far East and Eastern Siberia was put into operation. The project was implemented by Kay Point. The Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (KRDV) announced this on February 2, 2023.

The project with a total capacity of 880 racks and a capacity of 10 MW is implemented using modular technology in two stages. The first stage, which includes two process modules with a total capacity of 440 racks with an average power of 5 kW, is already available to customers. The commissioning of the second stage is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024. The first involves the construction of two process modules with a total capacity of 440 racks with an average power consumption of 5kW.

The characteristics of the data center, according to its developers, are comparable to the parameters of the best Russian data centers successfully operating in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The project, the cost of which exceeds 1.5 billion rubles, was implemented using a tool for preferential financing of priority investment projects in the Far Eastern Federal District.

According to the KRDV, the Key Point project, long before commissioning, aroused direct interest from both federal and regional companies and enterprises from different industries. The first major client of the new data center was VimpelCom. By the beginning of February 2023, substantive work on certain contracts for renting the capacity of the data center. It is expected that by the end of the first quarter of 2023, the first stage of the data center will be contracted by 90%, the corporation said.

2021: Start of construction of the first Tier III data center in the Far East

On the territory of advanced development (TOP) "Nadezhdinskaya" in the Primorsky Territory, the first data center of the Tier III level according to the Uptime Institute classification will be built in the Far East and Eastern Siberia. The corresponding agreement of the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic JSC (KRDV) was concluded with Kay Point on March 1, 2021, the press service of the Ministry of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic reports.

As part of the project, it is planned to build data center modules, each of which will include four blocks of 50 racks. The project will be implemented in two stages - each with 200 racks of 5 kW load. The launch of the first stage is scheduled for the first half of 2022.

According to Sergey Skaliy, director of the resident policy department of KRDV JSC, the management company will assist in choosing a site at a discounted price, and also undertakes to provide the project with infrastructure facilities. In addition, the issue of providing a free customs zone for the import of high-tech equipment will be worked out.

According to the general director of Kay Point, Evgeny Virtsera, the Primorsky Territory was chosen for the implementation of the project due to the lack of data centers in the Far East that meet internationally recognized standards for the reliability and overall performance of data centers.

As noted in Kay Point, in the entire Far East with its vast territory there are no data centers that meet international standards. The data center will advance the local infrastructure. In addition, the Chinese are interested in construction - their IT companies are increasingly working in Primorye and throughout the macro-region, the KRDV said.

To implement the project, Kay Point enlisted the partner support of 3data. Investments in the construction of the data center by the beginning of March 2021 were not disclosed.[5]
