2024: Wi-Fi router sales up 5% to $37bn

In 2024, the global wireless router market reached $37.17 billion. This is 5% more compared to 2023, when device sales were estimated at $35.41 billion. Such data are given in the Market Research Future study, the results of which were published in early February 2025.

The demand for high-speed Internet connection is one of the main drivers of the industry in question. With the development of streaming video services, virtual and augmented reality platforms, online games, as well as remote and hybrid work models, the need for reliable wireless networks with high bandwidth is increasing. This leads to increased sales of Wi-Fi routers - both in the consumer and corporate sectors. As company employees and students often rely on video conferencing and other bandwidth-demanding applications, shipments of Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E routers are growing.

The expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure and the increase in the number of smart home devices also have a stimulating impact on the market. All kinds of security systems, thermostats, lighting controls, smart assistants and smart appliances require a network connection, which is used by Wi-Fi routers. At the same time, consumers are looking for routers that not only provide reliable and high-speed communication, but also guarantee coverage of significant areas.

Technological advances play an important role, in particular, the introduction of the Wi-Fi 7 standard, also known as IEEE 802.11be. It supports three bands - 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz, as does Wi-Fi 6E. But if Wi-Fi 6 was created mainly in response to the growing number of mobile devices, then Wi-Fi 7 is aimed primarily at increasing data transfer rates. This standard supports 320 MHz channels, 16 MU-MIMO spatial streams, as well as 4096-QAM, Multi-RU and Multi-Link technologies, making the maximum speed reach 46 Gbps, which is 4.8 times higher than Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E (9.6 Gbps). Multichannel communication allows devices to simultaneously send and receive data on different frequency bands and channels. This helps increase bandwidth, reduce latency, and improve connectivity stability for tasks such as VR/AR, online gaming, remote work, and cloud computing.

In 2024, dual-band Wi-Fi routers (2.4 and 5 GHz) brought in $12.5 billion, three-band (2.4, 5 and 6 GHz) - $7.75 billion. The Mesh segment accounted for $8 billion. Wi-Fi 6 products provided revenue of $4.5 billion, Wi-Fi 6E - $4.42 billion. Geographically, North America was leading with costs of $15 billion. This is followed by Europe and the Asia-Pacific region with an estimate of $10.5 billion and $8 billion, respectively. South America brought in $2.5 billion, the Middle East and Africa - $1.17 billion. Major players in the global market are:

In the future, analysts at Market Research Future believe that the industry will demonstrate sustainable development. The compound percentage CAGR is expected to be 4.99%. As a result, by 2035, costs could rise to $63.51 billion.[1]

2023: Global Wireless Industrial Router Sales Rise 10% to $7.56 Billion for the Year
