Business tourism growth by 7% to 3.47 million people
In 2023, 3.47 million business tourists visited Moscow, which is 7% more than the previous year. Such data were provided by the head of the capital's tourism committee Evgeny Kozlov in April 2024.
According to him, Russian business tourists spent on average 16% more in Moscow than people who came to the city to visit their friends or relatives. The average check of foreign business guests turned out to be 1.3 times higher compared to 2022.
Evgeny Kozlov, the largest business tourist flow to Moscow in 2023 was recorded from China and the Middle East. According to a representative of Mostourism, Chinese tourists prefer a cultural vacation in Moscow, while business guests from the Middle East prefer gastronomy.
Evgeny Kozlov pointed out the importance of business tourism from the point of view of the economy, since this focuses on many related industries: from the hotel sector to the entertainment industry. Moreover, this is a source of age-related tourists, because about 40% of business guests return to the capital to relax with their family.
The head of the Moscow Tourism Committee noted that for business events in the capital by April 2024 there are over 150 non-standard locations, including museums, parks, theaters and others. Thus, in 2023, as part of the introductory screenings of Mostourism, industry representatives and corporate customers examined 13 such locations.
Kozlov added that in 2024 a new format of meetings in unusual locations will be launched - "Moscow Living Rooms," within which guests will be able to see in practice the work of the site and learn about useful projects of the capital's government. The first meeting will take place on April 16 at the Moscow Planetarium, where representatives of the Moscow Department of Culture will speak, summed up the chairman of Mostourism.[1]
Tourism in Moscow increased by 22% compared to pre-pandemic 2019
Tourism in Moscow at the end of 2023 increased by 22% compared to 2019, when there was no COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, due to which tourist flows sharply decreased around the world. This was announced on January 8, 2024 by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

According to him, this result was achieved due to the constant improvement of urban infrastructure and focus on global trends.
The message on the website of the mayor and the government of Moscow specifies that the business tourism segment remains at the level of 20% in the domestic market, while the number of business trips in 2023 increased by 28% compared to 2022.
The capital held three major tourism conferences in 2023. Together, more than a thousand guests took part in them - representatives of the Russian and foreign hospitality industries, organizers of congress and exhibition events, experts in the field of business, industrial, educational and other types of tourism.
Thanks to the developed infrastructure and original thematic projects, Moscow received the status of "Capital of Children's Tourism - 2024." According to a survey of residents of 10 regions, from where travelers most often come to Moscow, a quarter of them visit the city precisely in order to show the capital to their children, according to a message on the website of the mayor and the government of Moscow.
In addition, tourists are attracted by the choice and variety of cuisine, this is an important factor in preparing for travel. For international tourists, the cost of restaurants and catering is 34%, for Russian travelers they occupy the second place after shopping. Every fourth tourist from the regions of the Russian Federation visits a popular Moscow restaurant or bar.[2]
2022: Revenue growth by 22.7% to RUB 879.1 billion
Tourism revenues in Moscow in 2022 reached 879.1 billion rubles, which is 22.7% more than a year earlier. The city budget from this industry received 120.4 billion rubles. Metropolitan Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote about this on February 15, 2023 in his blog.
According to him, domestic tourism remains the driver of the development of the tourism industry - more than 90% of tourists come to Moscow from other regions. The number of tourists among children in 2022 amounted to 3.8 million.
As Sobyanin noted, in 2022 "the emphasis was shifted from anti-crisis to stimulating support measures." The city allocated 350 million rubles to support the tourism industry. These funds went to compensate the organizers of business and youth events and the tourism development program among citizens over 55 years old.
The organizers of conferences, congresses, scientific forums and cultural events for young people received access to grants of up to 10 million rubles each. Thanks to this, more than 20 thousand people attended 61 business events in Moscow. 7.2 thousand guests who came for business purposes stayed in hotels, and the turnover of tourist consumption amounted to 470 million rubles, the mayor summed up, summing up the results of 2022.[3] |
