BMW did not disclose the principle of processing animal bowel movements into energy used in the production of cars. Marcus Duneman only noted that this project became part of the company's plans to transfer its plants only to renewable sources by 2020. By the end of 2016, they accounted for 63% of the electricity of the concern's enterprises.
According to Bloomberg news agency, in practice, BMW's plans mean that the company will have to find sufficient renewable energy capacity to provide its enterprises with energy equivalent to the needs of about 220 thousand residential buildings, based on annual electricity consumption of 1 TW.
The BMW plant in Leipzig (Germany) is powered by wind generators, and in Spartanberg (USA) by methane generated at a nearby landfill. By November 2017, the auto giant had 31 production sites deployed in 14 countries.
In a conversation with Bloomberg, BMW Sustainability Strategy Development Director Yuri Witschnig said that in order to implement the plan to increase the use of renewable sources, the company will conclude more agreements with solar energy suppliers. As part of such transactions, power systems will be jointly developed for BMW enterprises, which can also become the basis for long-term contracts for future projects, Vitsnig said.[1]
