The Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) is a global non-profit intellectual mobility consortium. MOBI and our members create blockchain-based standards for identifying vehicles, people, businesses and MOBI Trusted Trip. We are building a digital Web3 infrastructure for connected cars and IoT commerce .

History

2021: Launch of a project to store data on accidents and maintain cars in the blockchain

In early April 2021, automotive giants BMW, Ford and Honda teamed up with auto insurance providers and technology companies IBM and Accenture to work on an international cross-industry platform for storing data on accidents and vehicle maintenance on the blockchain.

The companies have teamed up to work on a new vehicle identification initiative (VID), the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI), which will focus on vehicle registration and maintenance tracking, according to a press release. Such a database will help owners and dealers access data on mileage, accident history and car damage.

The working group to create the initiative will be led by BMW and Ford, and will also include Amazon Web Services, AutoData Group, Bosch, Car IQ, DENSO, DMX, Hitachi's U.S. subsidiary, Kar Auction Services, Luxoft, Quintstamp, Ownum and the United Services Automobile Association.

Registration of vehicles on the blockchain allows previously disparate vehicle registration systems between states and countries to unite within a safe, common and reliable register, the developers of the initiative note. - Data traceability during maintenance will provide buyers, regulators and insurers with all the necessary information protected from unauthorized access.

The creators of MOBI said the platform will also deal with the supply chain, car financing, charging electric vehicles and issues related to the sharing of data on autonomous vehicles.

This is not the first experience of the automotive industry in applying blockchain technology. Another MOBI participant will be the carVertical automobile project based in Lithuania, which already provides a platform for storing car data based on blockchain technology.[1]

2019: Development of blockchain projects

In October 2019, it became known that the new Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) consortium, created by the largest automakers, has begun to develop projects to use blockchain in the transport industry. The alliance members began with an identification system that will automatically pay for parking and travel on paid sections of the road.

This project was taken up, Honda,, and BMW Renault. General Motors Ford They took as a basis the MOBI platform, developed by the Vehicle Identification Working Group, which is part of the consortium, and originally presented in July 2019. The solution, called Vehicle Identification, uses blockchain and a basic vehicle recognition system.

The system will assign unique identifiers to cars with information about the owner and the history of the car. The goal of the project is to eliminate the need for human participation in the process of calculating parking or travel without the use of bank cards and cash.

In the future, cars will be able to connect to other networks to pay for refueling or charging. In addition, partners in the framework of the technology are considering the possibility of using cryptocurrencies to pay the driver compensation for the return of energy to the power grid after a failure.

It is assumed that at first the blockchain platform will store the minimum information about cars that is assigned to it during production. In the future, the list of available information will be expanded: for example, it is planned to add a history of car ownership, information about an accident, etc.
