2019: Mitsubishi and NTT purchased 30% of Here for $1 billion

On December 20, 2019 the Japanese companies NTT also Mitsubishi Motors announced purchase of a 30% share in Here. The cost of the transaction in the press release is not specified, but was announced it at a press conference — more than $1 billion. The amount is given by the newspaper Financial Times whose reporters were present at this conference.

After closing of the transaction (it is planned on the first half of 2020) NTT and Mitsubishi Motors are going to begin technology cooperation with Here company. Among other things partners will study use methods data of Here for decrease in traffic jams in the cities and increases in efficiency of supply chains.

Mitsubishi she also intends to use developments of the purchased company for the projects in the field of unmanned vehicles. The Here HD Live Map service offers special maps of roads of high resolution for cars with off-line control. These cards can be complemented with the data registered by means of sensors on vehicles.

In Mitsubishi claim that the bargain is concluded not to compete with Google and navigation service Waze.

Besides, as stated in the press release, the Japanese giants thanks to investments into Here expect to expand the business in the Pacific Rim.

At BMW, Daimler and Audi will remain Here controlling stake (54%). NTT and Mitsubishi will belong on 15% through the joint holding company registered in Holland.[1]

2016

Intel buys a share of 15% in Here

Intel announced in the end of the year purchase 15% of stocks of the German company Here which is engaged in development of digital maps and services for tracking of location. Together with Intel of BMW, Audi and Daimler are going to be engaged in development of navigation services of high accuracy for completely automated pilotless cars. In the official statement it is about the positioning accuracy of cars "up to centimeters".

Also in the end of the year the Singapore fund of management of state property of GIC with the assistance of the Chinese partners redeemed 10% of shares of Here.

Audis, BMW and Daimler redeemed cards of Nokia

On August 3, 2015 the company Nokia announced sale of cartographic business to the German auto giants BMW, Daimler and Audi (enters into concern Volkswagen). The cost of purchase is estimated at 2.8 billion euros.

Under the name Here Nokia the Finnish company will receive from sale of division in net 2.5 billion euros, considering a business debt in 300 million euros. Shares in this asset will be equally divided between buyers. It is going to close the transaction in the first quarter 2016. By this time the solutions should state the relevant antimonopoly authorities.

BMWs, Daimler and Audi are going to make a basis for development of technologies of pilotless control of cars of Here Nokia. It is known that this division already works with 10 car makers over self-driving vehicles.

"This acquisition shows that car makers expect the huge growth of technologies of autonomous driving and interaction of vehicles. All these companies long time cooperate with Here in the field of cards therefore they well know about quality of service" — the analyst of LBBW Frank Biller commented on the transaction.

According to the statement made jointly by BMW, Daimler and Audi Here an independent team of heads will manage, and the company at the same time will continue development and promotion of cards in all current markets of presence.

By the beginning of August, 2015 the Here Nokia group including 6500 employees delivers the cartographic services used approximately in 80% of the automobile information and entertaining systems in North America and Europe. In the first half of 2015 operating profit of division was 28 million euros, and according to the results of the 2014th it showed a loss in the amount of 1.24 billion euros in which cost depletion of intangible assets entered 1.21 billion euros.

On April 15, 2015 Nokia announced the beginning of a strategic research concerning cartographic division. Later the company specified that the carried-out inspection it is not necessarily possible to lead to business sale.[2]

Offered Uber Nokia of $3 billion for the Here cards

The Uber company known mainly for the application of a call of the same name of the taxi, suggested to redeem in May, 2015 the Here cards developed by the Finnish Nokia for $3 billion[3].

Reports NYT with reference to three anonymous sources. Since Nokia last month announced readiness to sell the cartographic service, the consortium of the German car makers, the including BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, with assistance of the Chinese search engine Baidu managed to become interested in it. Also among the arrived offers there is a request from the unknown buyer.

Uber strongly depends on Google maps and, apparently, tries to depart from this partnership. In March it became known that Uber purchased deCarta company which works decade in the field of creation of cards. Also sources claim that in recent months the company gained several dozens of engineers in department of development of cards.

Google has the vast majority of users of cards on mobile devices — about one billion users that in 10 times more users of Here. However Nokia keeps sure leadership in automobile cartographic services, occupying about 80% of the market of the built-in navigation systems.

It is possible to assume that Uber is going to use cards for improvement of logistics as it took the first steps in the field of delivery of orders recently. Besides the good cartography is required also for Uber Pool, raydsheringovy company services.

The last, but not on value, the initiative of Uber to create own autopiloted vehicles is the reason for purchase of Here. This year it became known that the division of Uber Advanced Technologies Center company together with Carnegie's University — Mellon works on such project. However, Mercedes also works on similar technologies, thus it is known that the German car maker already uses Here technologies which headquarters is located, by the way, in Berlin. Google was already told too that work on pilotless machines.

Nokia promised to sell Here, the department with turnover is more than $1 billion (about 8% of all turnover of the Finnish company), until the end of May.

2012

Agreement with Yandex

On January 30, 2012 it became known that Yandex selects NAVTEQ for support of geographically attached Internet services. This agreement opens for the operator of the host of the Russian search system access to the global database of cards of NAVTEQ with the right of their use on any of the domains worldwide. Go cards of high resolution NAVTEQ Map from Europe to Eurasia into the disposal of Yandex, from North America to Australia and Asia. So, in September, 2011 the company opened the web portal in Turkey, and in October began to offer services on the basis of the geospatial data of the territory of Turkey provided to NAVTEQ.

Start in India of service of monitoring of traffic jams

On January 13, 2012 it became known that NAVTEQ starts in India the popular service of informing on a situation on roads in real time — NAVTEQ Traffic Pro. Now more than 26 million residents of two largest and most densely populated cities of the country — Delhi and Mumbai — will get access to the complete information about a road situation in real time.

Researches show that the Indian drivers who are regularly using the systems of navigation which provide information on traffic spend 18% less time in traffic jams, than other drivers, thereby reducing the total quantity of time which is carried out on the way in a year, approximately for three days. Besides, statistics demonstrates that the drivers using service of informing on a situation on roads in real time note reduction of the distance passed by the car and also fuel economy thanks to which the number of emissions of a carbon dioxide gas decreases approximately by 628 kg on one driver or becomes 23% less, than at the drivers who are not using the navigation system.

2011: Supplier of NIS GLONASS

February, 2011: NAVTEQ is selected from quality of the product provider and services for JSC Navigation-Information Systems (NIS GLONASS). This transaction is unique for NAVTEQ: the company will play an important role not only in formation of the market of cartography and navigation in Russia, but also promotion and development of GLONASS system, projects implementation and expansion of scopes of application where it is going to use the NAVTEQ cards.

Being the state-private enterprise, NIS GLONASS implements complex approach for development of the Russian navigation system, including creation of infrastructure which operators could use for start and providing navigation services, and development of a GLONASS products for the Russian and foreign markets. The company also gives technical support during the work with navigation systems and in general promotes commercialization of GLONASS. Within the reached agreement NAVTEQ undertakes to give to NIS GLONASS technical support and consulting services and also to provide cartographic information on the Russian Federation.

The NIS GLONASS major project is "ERA-GLONASS" - the Russian automated system of response to the road accidents. This system provides infrastructure for mass implementation of the GLONASS receivers and different navigation and information systems and services. Operation of a system is in full going to begin since 2013.

2010: 5000 employees in 48 countries

In 2010 the main office of the company is in Chicago (USA). Staff of the company about 5000 employees in 212 branches in 48 countries of the world.

The Navteq company provides complex digital geospatial data for work of automated systems of navigation, mobile and wireless devices, cartographic applications on the Internet and also government and professional solutions.

Theoretically the companies are interesting projects on creation of cards to the states. But in Russia there is a number of unresolved questions — for example, with copyright of cards. If the company creates the card by request of the state, then it disposes of it. The policy of Navteq consists in creating and expanding own commercial cartographic base.

2008: Nokia buys Navteq for $8 billion and starts Ovi Maps

Acquisition of Navteq company by Nokia corporation for $8 billion took place in 2008.
