2021: Chinese auto giant Geely has launched a company for the production of smartphones

At the end of September 2021, Geely announced the start of strategic cooperation between its subsidiary Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology and the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone. The partnership involves the production of smartphones.

The new company will be located in Wuhan and will focus on "integrating global technologies and resources for the development of premium smart devices, including smartphones, for global consumers," Geely said in a press release.

Geely did not disclose details about phone branding or when they could appear on the market, but the company said smartphones would complement its automotive business.

According to research company Canalys, smartphone shipments to China in the second quarter of 2021 decreased by 17% compared to the same period last year. According to IDC, in the world, deliveries grew by more than 13%.

Since Huawei's market share has decreased due to US sanctions, Chinese competitors, in particular Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, are looking to attract new customers. Geely will compete with companies such as Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi in the category of premium smartphones. The automaker's entry into the smartphone market emphasizes the desire to master new areas, such as the creation of satellites and flying cars.[1]
