Mobileye — the Israeli producer founded in 1999 software and the video cameras used in cars for the help to drivers, child division Intel. Technologies of the company can form the basis pilotless motor transport. As of March, 2017 the number of staff of Mobileye totals 600 people. Systems for prevention of collisions which were made by the Israeli company are set by machines BMW, GM and Volvo.
The Mobileye company develops technologies of automation and the largest world supplier of cameras for the active systems of assistance to the driver (advanced driver assistance systems, ADAS).
History
2021: Expansion of geography of tests of unmanned vehicles for four countries
On January 12, 2020 the Mobileye company, division of Intel, announced the development strategy and technologies which, as envisioned by the company, will allow land pilotless vehicles to become safer for all participants of traffic.
Automatic mapping of the area allows Mobileye to expand with pilotless vehicles geography of the tests worldwide. So, it is planned that at the beginning of 2021 unmanned vehicles will appear in Detroit, Tokyo, Shanghai, Paris and New York (in the course of obtaining permission). The company states, daily worldwide using crowdsourcing technology mapping of Mobileye nearly 8 million kilometers of highways are applied on electronic cards. And all for January, 2021 it is processed already by nearly 1 billion kilometers. The Mobileye technology equips nearly 1 million cars using the system of the help to the driver (ADAS). It is expected that further it will allow to make universal use of unmanned vehicles safe.
Amnon Shashua, the president and the CEO of Mobileye, shared plans of future development of the company: "Support of Intel company and our versatile approach to problems of automatic driving allow to expand use of Mobileye technology. From the very beginning of implementation of our plan any its parts were aimed at fast geographical and economic scalability". |
Amnon Shashua explained importance of implementation of a sensor system which is more effective, than possibilities of the person driver. Its functioning is ensured by technology of mapping Road Experience Management (REM) based on rules of safe driving with the increased responsibility (Responsibility-Sensitive Safety, RSS) and also two independent, completely redundant subsystems using the video camera, the radar and a lidar.
According to representatives of Mobileye, for general distribution of unmanned vehicles every possible reduction in cost of similar technologies is crucial to make them available to all. The solution which is proposed by Mobileye consists of the camera, available at the cost, used as main "sense organ", and the second, completely redundant, the systems of sensors. The efficiency of the similar device "image identifications", at least, is three times higher, than at the person, claim in the company.
Mobileye and Intel propose solutions which expand possibilities of radars and lidars on unmanned vehicles, at simultaneous decrease in their need for computing resources and cost value. According to the company, a crucial element of increase in traffic safety – in equipment of "UAVs" considerably improved systems of recognition and detection in radio - and optical ranges.
The radar technology of imagery Mobileye uses 2304 channels, its dynamic range makes 100 dB, and the level of side lobes of the antenna pattern (side lobe level) — 40 dbn. The programmable Mobileye radar uses digital signal processing, multipersonnel tracking and different scan modes that allows to process large volumes of measurements. All this provides to the radar the sensitivity level, sufficient for pilotless driving, explained in the company.
Amnon Shashua also told about how the Intel factory specializing in silicon photonics will be able to place active and undriven elements of the laser on a silicon crystal.
"The similar device is called still the photon integrated circuit (Photonic Integrated Circuit, PIC). It has 184 vertical lines from which then signals are transmitted through optical link. It considerably changes all picture" — noted Shashua, representing a lidar, the beginning mass production of which is expected in 2025. |
2018: The purchase order of the pilotless systems from the European car maker.
In May, 2018 it became known that Mobileye received the large order on delivery of the systems of off-line control by vehicles from one large European car maker. The company did not tell client name, but, most likely, it is about BMW.
According to Reuters with reference to the representative of Mobileye, the company will deliver to the customer of the device and the software which will be installed on 8 million autonomous cars. The news agency calls this transaction one of the largest in the history of the Israeli vendor belonging to Intel. At the same time financial terms of the contract are not disclosed.
Within the signed agreement of Mobileye will begin supply of equipment and software solutions in 2021. The special Intel processor EyeQ5 intended for pilotless machines will be just ready to that moment. It will replace in Intel EyeQ4 market which by May, 2018 only prepares for start on the market.
Mobileye cooperates with many large car makers, including General Motors, Nissan, BMW, Honda, Fiat Chrysler and NIO. It is expected that in 2019 these brands will begin to install pilotless systems with the third level of autonomy.
At the same time Mobileye tests UAVs of the fourth level. They are called by robotaxi, and they are already capable to move independently on streets and routes of Jerusalem, and not just on the closed polygons, but, certainly, under supervision of the drivers who are driving and ready to undertake driving in case of approach of emergency situation. In June, 2018 the company will begin testing of UAVs in California.
The CEO of Mobileye Amnon Shashua predicts that by the end of 2019 the systems of the third level of autonomy offered by the company will be installed more than on 100 thousand cars.
2017
Formula of the proof of safety of unmanned vehicles
In October, 2017, speaking at the World forum of knowledge in Seoul, South Korea, the chief executive officer of Mobileye and the senior vice president of Intel, professor Amnon Shashua offered the automotive industry the method allowing to confirm safety of unmanned vehicles. Its solution published in the scientific article and provided in a summary of this work for inhabitants offers a mathematical formula, using which it is possible to confirm that this or that unmanned vehicle works with observance of regulations of responsibility and cannot serve as a cause of accident, the blame for which could be laid on this car.

Intel buys Mobileye for $15 billion
On March 13, 2017 the producer of microprocessors Intel announced Mobileye purchase more than for $15 billion. This transaction the American semiconductor giant showed the high interest in autonomous cars.
The signed agreement assumes payment by Intel corporation for $63.54 for each stock Mobileye that is one third more than a quotation rate to closing of the exchange on March 10, 2017. In terms of money it corresponds to $15.3 billion. It is going to close the transaction until the end of 2017.
After the declaration of sale of Mobileye of a stock of the company rose in price for 33.3% (market capitalization instantly grew by $3.5 billion) then biddings by them were suspended. Securities of Intel, on the contrary, fell in price by 1.8%.
This transaction expands the strategy of Intel directed to investment into the market opportunities saturated with data which are under construction by force of the company in calculations and contact of a cloud with the device through network, says corporation. |
Intel and Mobileye have an experience of cooperation. Together with BMW they are going to test about 40 self-governed machines on public roads. Besides, the companies develop fifth generation of chips for pilotless motor transport which are going to be released by 2021.
According to the head of Intel Brian Krzanich (Brian Krzanich), having integrated, Intel and Mobileye will be able to accelerate approach of the future of robomobiles due to creation of an inexpensive cloud automobile solution.[1]
