2020: Intel announced Cornelis Networks creation
At the end of September, 2020 Intel announced creation of new company Cornelis Networks to which all business connected with Intel Omni-Path Architecture technology (Intel of OPA) is transferred. For this business the American corporation already found investors.
The technology of Intel of OPA represents the solution for high-speed switching and data transmission, performance improvement of applications in HPC-clusters of initial level and large-scale supercomputer projects.
The first in Cornelis Networks invested specialized venture fund Downing Ventures — division of the London investment firm Downing LLP. The amount of financing was $20 million. Chestnut Street Ventures and Intel Capital companies acted as other investors of a startup. The last also received a share in Cornelis Networks in exchange for the assigned rights, developments and assets which belong to the bus Omni-Path.
The Cornelis company is founded by already former employees of Intel Filip Murphy Jr., Vladimir Tamarkin and Gunnar Gunnarson who worked on Omni-Path technology as a part of semiconductor giant earlier. In the new company by the end of September, 2020 50 employees work, 40 of which passed Intel. The company is based in Wayne, the State of Pennsylvania, in the area where earlier some staff of Intel Omni-Path worked.
According to Filip of Murphy, department of Omni-Path which included transfer to the new company of intellectual property, stocks of the created products, support agreements and distribution contracts marks some kind of turn towards development of technologies and a product line.
Earlier it became known that Intel suspended development of the version of Omni-Path Architecture of the second generation (data transfer rate — 200 Gbps), at the same time having promised what will continue to sell and support products of first generation with a speed of 100 Gbps.[1]
