History
2023: Performing surgery on an oncopacient using preoperative 3D modeling
On March 7, 2023, the Federal Biomedical Agency of Russia (FMBA) announced the successful implementation of a unique operation using preoperative 3D modeling. During the surgical intervention, the oncopacient underwent resection of the ½ part of the tongue with its simultaneous reconstruction with a radial flap from the forearm area.
The procedure was carried out by specialists from the Department of Maxillofacial and Reconstructive Surgery of the National Medical Research Center of Otorhinolaryngology (NMICO) of the FMBA under the leadership of the head of the department, maxillofacial surgeon, microhurgeon, Doctor of Medical Sciences David Nazaryan. The patient was diagnosed with cancer of the lateral surface of the tongue - this is one of the most common types of malignant lesions of the oral cavity. The difficulties of surgical intervention in such tumors are associated not only with the complexity of the anatomical zone of the organ, but also with the occurrence of a post-operative functional defect leading to disorders of breathing, swallowing and speech.
During the operation, for the first time in Russia, the technology of computer 3D modeling at the preoperative stage was reportedly used. Doctors made individual resection templates and patterns for taking the flap to reconstruct the physiological form of the patient's tongue. To ensure the mobility and sensitivity of the tongue, chewing and swallowing, starting from the pre-operative stage, specialists from the Department of Phoniatrics of the NMICO FMBA were involved.
Resection 3D patterns in this reconstruction method made it possible to ensure the accuracy of resection of a part of the tongue within healthy tissues, the formation of the tip of the tongue, which plays an important role as a "landmark" in the oral cavity in speech, food consumption, respiratory function and social adaptation, the publication says. |
It is noted that the operation took place without complications, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in satisfactory condition. Breathing at discharge - free, voice sonorous, swallowing reflex is not disturbed.[1]
