The laboratory Information System (LIMS) is the information technology intended for obtaining reliable information based on tests and optimization of management of this information for the purpose of its use for acceptance of correct timely management decisions.

Laboratory information systems represent an independent class of the complex program systems intended for health care. Automation of laboratories – one of typical tasks which should be solved in the large diagnostic centers, hospitals or specialized commercial laboratories. Laboratory diagnostics for the attending physician are one of the most important methods of inspection of the patient.

The basic purpose of a PIM is an automation of work of staff of laboratory, increase in efficiency of the organization of work of laboratory, reduction of number of errors and manual transactions. Connection of automatic laboratory analyzers is the major line of a PIM attracting customers. It allows employees to transfer in the automated mode orders in analyzers and to receive from them results of researches, without resorting to manual control by materials and sorting of answers.

Existence in laboratory of a quality management system is integral is connected with the procedure of accreditation of laboratory (so far the tab will be inactive), in this case use of laboratory information systems considerably simplifies passing of this procedure. Besides, now the laboratories preparing for accreditation should meet requirements of GOST P ISO standard 5725-2002 ("Accuracy (correctness and a pretsizionnost) of methods and results of measurements"). To requirements of GOST P ISO 5725 Federal State Unitary Enterprise UNIIM of GOSSTANDART of Russia developed for creation of the mechanism of satisfaction MI 2335-2003 and MI 2336-2002.
